JERSEY WEANERS.

GREAT DEMAND IN WAIKATO. ’ About this time of the year, and every year, there comes a good demand for Jersey weaners from the Waikato district (says the Eltham Argus). This year is not proving any exception, and buyers 'are busy scouring the district for young stock. A nice little herd of about 50 weaners was driven through Eltham on Friday en route for the Waikato district. They were of excellent later on will form a valuable addition to the milking herds of the district they are consigned. to. The drover who was in charge of them ;told an Argus representative .'that, the demand for weaners as a very big one, and that it was. difficult to get all that were required' to meet the Waikato demand. The herd he was driving, he said, were obtained by scouring the countryside, but, he i added, they must be of good "quality. The Warn kato buyers are not purchasing scrubbers; they w'ant good ■ quality, and for that sort will pay fair prices. “Wc are skinning .Taranaki,” said he, “and T think that ycur farmers will be run-, nihg short of young stock.” The cattle business does seem a bit of a puzzle to those who are not. actually connected with the business. When “bobby calves” are seen by the hundreds going daily to the. freezing works in lorries and trains to be slaughtered, calves of excellent quality too, one wonders where the future herds are to come from. But they don’t fall off in numbers; in fact they are ■ increasing. And even after the wholesale slaughter of the “bobbies”, there are still young animals left to dispose of, as is proved by the shipments-that are being made to "the Waikato. It is only reasonable to assume that with the slaughter of the young calves and the sale of the wsaners there should be good prices in the spring for the “springers.”
