The assistance of tlie County Council was sought, and was' granted, at the meeting of that body on Saturday, for improvements at the war memorial in Manakau. In a letter, Mr. C. Nees, hon. secretary of the Memorial .Committee, stated that, at a public meeting held on April 36th, it was resolved that an effort be made to beautify the surroundings of the cenotaph; and, in order to carry out the intentions of the committee, it would be necessary to encroach on the roadway by taking a wedge-shaped strip, not more than eight feet at each end of the memorial, and Tun out to nothing at a distance of, say, 25 feet. The committee had made application to the Railway Department for permission to fence in a strip of land at the back of the memorial, in order to plant the same with suitable shrubs.’ Cr. Bryant informed the Council that he had pointed out to the County engineer what was required. Cr. Bryant did not think that the proposal would do any harm, but that it would improve the look of the township. The committee should erect a decent fence in place of the present one. He moved that the request be granted. Cr. Ryder seconded the' motion. The chairman said he understood from the engineer that the proposed lay-out would be rather an advantage than otherwise. The motion was carried.
