THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

SHANNON COUNCIL. LIGHT POLLING. Small interest was evinced at Shannon in the election of eight council- ' lors and two representatives on tne Wellington Harbour Board. At noon only sixty electors had recorded then votes, but during the afternoon there was a steady stream to the polling booth and when the poll closed at / -n.m. 273 electors had. recorcied their votes out of a total of 556 on the roll. No doubt the lack of interest was largely due to there being no mayoral election on this occasiorf. There were ten candidates nominated for the eight, seats on the Council of whom Messrs Hyde, Thwaifces, Downes, J. Curran jun., Jas. Curran, sen., and B. Hook were members .ot (the old Council, Messrs W. H. Gunning and E. J. S. Spencer not offering them,selves. The result, which was made known at 7.30 p.nt. showed that all tne above were returned with the addition of Messrs S. Anderson and B. Laurvig; the unsuccessful candidates beiug Messrs H. Hook and C. P. Grey. The election of two members toe the Wellington Harbour Board ed in Shannon returning Messrs Fitzherbeft and Elliott. To show the small amount of interest taken only about thirty persons took the trouble to assemble at the. Council Chambers to learn the results, the announcement of which were received in silence, while the successful candidates did not even consider it worth while to return thanks.
