SCHOOL SPORTS TROPHY.
HOBSON SHIELD WON BY LEVIN DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
SIX TEAMS COMPETE,
The Hobson Shield, which was instituted by the Mayor of Levin two years ago as a challenge trophy for school nports in the district, was contested on Saturday, when it passed out of. the Hinds of the Fox:on DistrictHigh School, who had held it from the outset, with the result that it will be a treasurecl possession of the Levin District High School until the next annual, contest is due. Six teams participated, representing four schools, there being two • feailis each from the Levin and Foxton District High Schools and one each from the Ohau and Tokomaru State Schools. Under the conditions of the contest a team consists of six boys and six girls, aged from 10 to 3 5 years. The team, that secured the honours of the day was Levin A, made up as follows:—Boys— F. Yuille, K. Hudson, T. Bird, J. Hudson, 11. Kingsbeer and R. Lester; girls B, Stilweil, ±\ Foster, 0. Veale, D. Stedman, U. Stilweil and M. Hudson. The weather was fine but close, presaging -a thunderstorm, the full effect of which was felt more to the northwest than in Levin; rain did not fall until the events had been completed, ■jand the grandstand afforded shelter .for the ceremony and presenting the ShielcT. There was a fair attendance of parents and fiiends of the pupils, and the various competitions vfere followed with much interest. The preliminary arrangements, such as the marking of the ground and the cutting of grass tracks, had all been carried out by Mr H. G. McDonald, of the Levin teaching staff, assisted by Mr W. La Roche (school caretaker) and a number of the pupils. Points in the events were allotted in the.proportions of five for a win, three for a second, and two ■for a third, and the aggregates were: Levin A 72, Foxton A 65, Levin B 42, Foxtor. B 36, Tpkomaru 20, Ohau 5. At one stage Levin A were 20 points behind Foxton A, and the issue was in .doubt until the last race had been run. The local team made a great recovery, gaining five firsts in succession in the last five events. On the day the Foxton girls were superior in athletics to those of Levin, but the deficiency wa3 made up by the boys. The officials, all of whom' carried out their duties were: Judges, Messrs A. J. Giln.our (Tokomaru), J. Connor (Ohau), and J. W. Procter (Levir.); starter, Mr George Watson; scorers, Messrs F. C. Clift (Levin) and F. Mason (Foxton); marksman, Mr C Procter (Foxton); marshal and secretary, Mr 11. McDonald.
At the gathering iu the grandstand, the Mayor (Mr T. Hobson) spoke a few words expressing appreciation of the extent to which the contest had been supported by schools of the district, and asked the Mayoress to present the Shield, which she handed to Mr R. J. Fo?s, headmaster of the Levin District High School. Mr F. Mason, Foxton headmaster, extended the congratulations of his school to the winners. He referred with pleasure to the sporting instinct of the two smaller schools —Tokomaru and Ohau —-which had prompted them to send in teams that, while having in chance of winning the Shield this year, had made the competition more strenuous and Levin's success more meritorious than it would otherwise have been. Mr Foss voiced the satisfaction of the Levin school at having acquired, the trophy and at the fine spirit in which defenders had taken their beating. He entrusted the Shield to the care of Mr McDonald, and praised the way in which the spoi ts had been man-' aged, mentioning that the credit for the whole of the arrangements was due to Mr McDonald. 'Cheers were given for the winners, the losers, and the donor of the Shield, bring a very happy function to a close. Following are the results of the events:—
