THE SHANNON ROUTE.
'URGENT QUESTION OF DANGEROUS CORNERS. REPRESENTATIONS TO DISTRICT ENGINEER. A clause in the Works Committee’s report recommended that the District Engineer of the Public Works Department be requested to expedite the inspection of the dangerous corners on the hill portions.'of No. GO Highway (Levin to Palmerston via Shannon). Cr. Gimblett: Do I understand that the engineer of the Main Highways Board toured thi3 district with the County Engineer? If so, we have no report. The County Engineer: I reported to the Works Committee.
" Cr. Gimblett:. There is nothing here, and I Want to know what has taken place. Cr. Barber: It seems there is a prospective deviation to take place of which we know nothing, and that the deviations originally arranged for are going to be altered. I don’t think that that is consistent. It is proposed to have a fresh deviation at. the foot of this end of the Ihakara Hill. , The Chainnaii: ; That is at their suggestion. Cr. Barber: They have restricted that deviation at the foot of the hill. The Engineer: It is not finalised yet. The matter has been referred back to me to endeavour to adopt their suggestion. I have nothing at present to say about it, but if it is going to be carried on as shown on the plan I am going to refer it back to the Council for their opinion. . • Cr. Barber: There was a bend at the very north end of the Tokomaru riding that veas’ restricted, and it is not what it should be. Why give a five-chain .curve on one por-tion of the main road ,and then re luce the other from a fivechain bend to two and a-half chains. These .discrepancies are creeping in all the time, aud it is not a fair thing to the travelling public. The Chairman: The tendency is to widen curves.
Cr. Barber: It was originally arranged that there should be a five-chain curve in that locality, and it is now reduced to two and a-half. The Chairman: You have it from the Engineer that if the matter cannot be arranged between him and the Board’s engineer, it will be referred back to the Council. The clause was adopted.
RELATIONS WITH KAIRANGA. BRIDGE AGREEMENT AND METAL CARTING. The Works Committee recommended that, in view of the prospective reconstruction of No. 60 Highway in the vicinity of the boundary between the Horowhenua and Kairalnga Counties, the ICairanga County Council be approached foe a re-consideration of the agreement in respect to the small bridge immediately* north of the Horowhenua Count}- boundary and situate in the Kairanga County. The Chairman said he did not know why the local bodies concerned had entered into this agreement. Now that the highways were being formed and subsidised, it was a fair thing that every local bod}} should assume its own responsibilities. The recommendation was agreed to Cr. Barber stated that the Kairanga County Council was carting quite a lot of metal over Hume’s Road (in this county) to the main road. The Engineer: They do that every year. The Chairman: Where is it from? Cr. Barber: The Manawatu river:
The Chairman: How many miles of our roads are they using Cr. Barber: About three miles.
The Chairman: I think that tin local bodies should be treated the same as anyone else, and if any damage is done they should make it good. Cr. Barber: If their attention is drawn to it, it is only right. "It was decided that the Engineer l'cfe-r the natter to the Kairanga County Engineer.
