SPORTING NOTES.

masterton review.

' (By ••'Silken Rein.”)

The Masterton Racing Club’s meeting to be held to-day and to-morrow of'this week, is the next fixture of interest to local sportsmen. The acceptances received by the Club gives promise of a successful meeting, and some interesting sport. Form disclosed at Easter holiday fixures should be a fairly reliable guide for the speculative public. Elicit and Nova?.

The opening event, the Highweight Handicap, has drawn a good field included in which are a few jumpers, who are preparing for the winter sport. Starboard Light’s win at Wairarapa will bring him in for some consideration, while there are one or two below him who are likely to run well. ■Red Fusehia and Elicit are undoubtedly the best pair, but the former is 1 likely to fulfil a later engagement. Novar has strong claims lor support ‘ and in the possible absence of Red Fusehia, the son of Sarto —Black Ada may prove the hardest one for Elicit to beat. , Btreame? and Golden Flower.

There is very little form for speculation in the Novice Stakes. Gambler yhad a third very early in the season and a third at Feilding, but his performances aie not as good as either Streamer or Golden Flower. Ex Dono and Ben Hur.

There is a possibility of a surprise In the Juvenile Handicap, but. the performances of Ex Done at Wairarapa were first class and the extra burden should not put him altogether out ot it. Ben Hur is one that also appeals. Billion and Royal Black.

‘ The top weight, Atholspear, has improved considerably' of late and his connections may decide to start him in the principal event, where he has 7.6., Red Fu.schia, if started, deserves, consideration, while Royal Black and Billion performed well at Easter. It a surprise is in store it is most likely to come from Brilliant Light or Aurora Borealis, but beyond a saver, it is difficult to see past Billion and Royal Black.

Tcheka and Teri.

There is a good field due in the principal event and it promises to bo a good race. The Swell 7.13, Tresham 8.9, and Tehelca 7.9, finished in that order in the Easter Handicap at Wairarapa, and a review of the 'weights makes Tcheka the best off by 91b from The Swell and 41b from Tresham. He is an improver and that is worth considering./ Teri is one that is showing return of form and at his best he is a good mover. Mendip, if started, should be the prime fancy, but it is not. certain yet whether lie will be brought over. Joy Bird will appeal on hoilimning at Feilding, and in fact the class to-morrow does not ‘appear near ' as strong as that which beat her into fourth place on both days and with approximately the same weight, she should put up a good .performance. \ Spearmiss and Raineses will appreciate their light impost. When the machine closes Tresham and Joy Bird may be elected pair, but the chances of Tcheka and Teri cannot be denied. Quantum and Veronese.

Ten runners are due to line up in the second leg, with Tiega on top of the list. He will probably be m need of a race. If The Swell wins the Cup there will, no doubt, be extra money for his .stable companion. Bonogne. Relying on Wairarapa form Quantum and Veronese should do best. 1 . FtUl Mark land Australis.

The Grandstand Handicap of seven furlongs is not a strong field. Billion who has an earlier engagement, would claim most suppoi t if started here. First Ruler, Lady Spear, Australis and Full Mark will be fairly evenly supported with prefeience for the latt»r pair. Arrow Boy and Moutoa Wonder.

The concluding event has nine runners. Brown Sugar, Roi de Val, ami St. Melba have fairly good recent form for recommendation, but the chances of Arrow Boy and-Moutoa Wonder are liked best. They should, at least, capture a portion of the stake. Kingsfield Stud Sale.

At the dispersal sale of Kingsfield s stud in the Hunter Valley, N.S.W., 42 mares were sold and among the offer- ' jng was thci brood mare Pansy by Polymelus —Rousseau's Dream, by Saraband Pansy is the dam of Vevtigern, and when offered for sale with a bay colt , foal at foot by Rossendale, and in ffial to Pantheon, realised llOOgns. The colt foal is a full brother to Vertigern. An English bred chestnut mare, a half sister to Vertigern by Sunflower 11., and served by Orley’s Pride, changed hands for 40gns. A sister to Rascal, and half-sister to Millais and Chit was sold for 175gns, while, Roseneath, a full sister to The Thorn, brought 425 gns. ■ Mollison Plays Well.

Mollison,* winner of the All Aged Stakes at Randwick last week, has recently been giving proof that he is coming back to his tivo year old form. At that age he established a record for one of his age in Australia, as his seven essays many, wins, his earnings totalling £17,318. Back to Work.

: Prince Humphrey, after an enforced absence from training, has made his reappearance on the track at Takanini

and shows very little signs of the soreness he developed after being galloped on in Australia. Prince Humphrey, it will be remembered, finished in front of the then unbeaten Mollison, in the A.J.C. Derby. Limerick’s Earnings. Limerick’s earnings in stakes now total about £38,000. He taken second place in the list of winning horses in this part of the world, replacing Eurythmic. whose total stands at £36,391. Gloaming still holds the record, with £43,100, but Limerick is now within measurable distance of him, and if he remains sound his racing next season will be invested with unusual interest.

Odds and Ends. Supremacy will not be raced again until next season. T. Metcalf has been engaged to pilot Bouogne, Hunting Call and Full Maivc at Masterton. Mollison started a better favourite than Limerick when he beat the Limond gelding in the All Aged Stakes at the A.J.C. meeting. A.. G. Murray, will have the mount on Ramoses in the Masterton Cup and Ladyluller in' the Plying, while C. Broughton, another apprentice in G. New’s stable, will ride Oral in the Juvenile Handicap at Masterton.
