SHANNON WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

ANNUAL MEETING.

The above meeting was held in Carter’s Buildings on Wednesday afternoon, when there was a large attendance of members, the president (Mrs E. Butt) presiding. PRESIDENT’S REPORT.

The President, in her annual report, stated that: The Institute is in a flourishing condition. In addition to clearing the debt off the piano and helping' a °number of families through the recent hard winter, the Library is an accomplished fact and is well patronised -by members, and the committee contemplate buying a further supply of books. During the past year the branch was represented at the Federation meeting at Waipukurau and much information and instruction was gained. Mrs W. Taylor attended the Handicraft Week held in Napier and gained useful knowledge ol: general arts, which she has imparted to members. During the past year a member of an English Women’s Institute had visited Shannon and'gave demonstrations in making slippers and hearth brooms, which proved very interesting, while, other demonstrators during the year were Mrs James Alloway and Sigley. of Levin, and Mrs Guerin, of Shannon. The weekly card parties were not so successful financially as last year; nevertheless they were much enjoyed. Thanks are due to Mr A. H. Hill for supplying hot water at the meeting ahd helping in other ways; to Mr Retter for an .unstinted and continuous supply of firewood; to Mr Pritchard for running the card tourney and being our right hand man generally; Mr A, E. Hyde and many others who had helped. Some of the old menibers have left the district, while others are sick, so that the membership has fallen off, but- there are still between thirty and forty members. The funds are rather depleted at present owing to the purchase of furniture for the new room, but the way is clear tc- augment the banking account by holding socials anjd lectures Avithout incurring further cost? for .rent. It is hoped to purchase electric heaters and kettles for use at evening meetings and social gatherings. Mrs Pareell b ' a member whom they should thank most heartily for instruction''in,, community singing and music. Regret Avas expressed at the resignation of their secretary, Mrs J. X T. Bovis, who has had to resign this position OAving to ill-health. Mrs H. Taylor had come to their assistance end very kindly •consented to fill the position.

BALANCE SHEET

The balance sheet presented Avas considered very satisfactory; it shoAved a credit balance of £2 16s Gld. 4 ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The folloAving officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, the Mayoress (Mrs E. Butt); vice-presi-dent, Mrs Waring Taylor; secretary and treasurer, Mrs 11. Taylor; commit-tee,-the president, Vice-president, secretary and Mesdambs Hudson, BoAvler, Parcell, Hyde, Pettit, Osborne and Miss Butt, GENERAL. The president (Mrs Butt) Avas appointed delegate to represent . the branch at the annual meeting of the Wellinigijon Provincial Federation to be held in Palmerston North, on 18th April. It Avas resolved to notify members that the Library fees, are due next month.. Also that neAV books be purchased.
