CLOGGED PETROL CAP

A few days ago a motorist was reminded that a clogged hole in the cap .on the pertol tank will interfere with, the flow of petrol sufficiently to stop the car. It took him the best part of half an hour to discover that the- air hole was blocked with mud from the road. It took him only half a minute to remove the obstruction ■ with a pin, and all was well again. Petrol can only got out of the tank if air can get in to take its place. It is popularly thought, by the way, that petrol is sucked into the vacuum tank from the lower level rear tank by the suction of the engine. This, is not so. Petrol is forced info the vacuum tank by the pressure of air on the surface of the petrol in the rear tank, i, The question is aimply <£ne of relative pressures.
