DATA CONCERNING HIGHWAYS

DOMINION-WIDE REPORT BEING PREPARED. The Canterbury Progress League gave notice, in a circular, of which the Horowhenua Count}* Council received a copy on Saturday, that it was compiling a data report on highways for the special information of local bodies interested in highway improvements. It was proposed that the report should contain the fullest possible information regarding (a) approved or standardised specifications of pavements (concrete,-bitumenised concrete, penetration process, hot mix, etc.); (b) particulars of navements constructed in New Zealand; (e) history of actual pavements in the Dominion, showing state of road, density of traffic, maintenance charges incurred, and any other information bearing upon the life of the road; (d) sinking fu*d tables. The League asked for some account of pavements laid down by the Council, giving the state of the road before paving, the density of the traffic before and after paving, the maintenance costs incurred before and after paying, the. length of road, type of pavement, and th& cost per mile, ani any other information bearing upon tie paying problem. . . The County Chairman (Mr Monk) said that the Leajgue might gather information which would be of some value to local bodies,'but he did not know in what form the League proposed to make it available to them. The County , Engineer promised that, if the communication was referred to him, he would supply what information he could, but it must be at his own convenience. No traffic tally had been taken for some years, and the Council could not supply that; statistics that were only approximate were sometimes dangerous. On the motion of the Chairman, sec onded by Cr. Bryant, the League's request was referred to the Engineer.
