MR FIELD, M.P., ADVOCATES RESERVING PAPAITONGA LAKE.
BUSH SITE FOR A STATE BOTANICAL GARDEN.
In response to. the invitation to be present at the conference in Leviu this evening to consider the future uses of the Central Development Farm, Mr W. H. Field, M.P., has written to
the secretary of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr F. P. Walkley) that lio may be prevented by other cngagaments from attending, but that he will do his best to be present. Mr Field has also forwarded, for the information of the conference, a copy of a letter wheh he wrote to the Minister' of Education on February loth'* and a copv of Section 12 of the Reserves and Other Lands Disposal Bill, 1928, which gives power for any part of the Farm to be made a public reserve for such purposes as may be specified by Order-in-Council. In his letter to the Minister, which was accompanied by the Chronicle report of the Levin District HigW iSchool ICommittne's discussion, Mr Field traced the history of the Farm as a Government institution, and referred to proposal by one section of the .community that it should be subdivided for dairy settlement, and the movement sponsored by the School Committee to have the Farm or a'portion of it set aside for the purposes of agricultural education in some form. In the event of the latter proposal being entertained, he advocated that the Papaitonga Lake be acquired a:ul added to the college area and that the bush be reserved to form the beginning of a State botanical garden.
