SHANNON ATHLETIC CLUB'S SPORTS.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. A dull morning, with one or two light sliowers of rain, did not look too 'promising on Saturday for the Shannon Amateur . Athletic and Cycling Club’s Sports fixture in the afternoon. Fortunately, the weather cleared at midday and the rain held off until evening. The attendance, although not so large as last year, was quite satisfactory, Visitors being present from all the neighbouring townships. Good entries were received for the various events, , particularly the cycling, in which large fields faced the starter. The track was in *good order ami the racing was interestin, some very close finishes being witnessed, these demonstrating the excellent handicapping by Mr G. Watson, of Levin. Proceedings commenced at 1 p.ni. and from start to finish, there were no delays, the committee getting each event off at the advertised time, with the result that the public’s attention was kept occupied all the time; for which the Committee are deserving of the highest praisQ. A pleasing feature was the interest shown by patrons by the manner in which 'they applauded the winners. During the running of the two mile cycle event, in which there were fifteen competitors, four of the cyclists came to grief in a bunched field, when turning out of the straight on the lasi lap, and at the' far corner at the top cf; the course two more came down. All escaped with minor scratches excepting. Hutchinson, who was among the first lot, it being discovered laten when he, started in the three mile cycle handicap that he had broken three ribs. • When the first group came down one of the cycles went into the fence, the pedal striking a five-year-old boy named Edgar Bass, who was standing at the fence with his parents, Mr and Mrs Bass, of Vance Street, indicting a nasty .cut on the thigh, which necessitated sik'stitches being inserted.. Little Valerie Young received a nasty blow on the ank’e and it-was feared at first that a bone was broken, but after mddieal attention, it was found this was not the case.
The arrangements for the gathering were .under the supervision of the Club president (Mr R. Downes) and Mr J. T. Bovis, the secretarial dutips were in charge of Mr T. Kohika; the fields were despatched by Mr G.' Watson (Lqvin); and Mr K. Henry announced, with th& aid of a megaphone, the events and names of the winners.
