COUNTY WORKS.
REPORT OF THE ENGINEER. The following report on. work in the County was presented to the Horowhemia County Council by the engineer on Saturday, and was adopted:— Tokomaru Riding.—Work in connection with paving the Shannon-Makerua section of Main Highway has been progressing. One and one-quarter miles of road have been completed to date. The paving gang have now caught up with ilie metal supplies and I am finding it difficult to keep the.gang fully employed. The Austin crusher is now working, and I hope, by working long /hours, to bo able to deliver the required quantity of metal on. to the road. Unfortunately the opening in the jaws of the Austin crusher is very small and this will necessitate employing at.least oae extra man to.spawl the stone to a size that will go into, the crusher. The road grader has been employed on the Main Highway. Maintenance metal has been placed on the highway from Shannon Borough boundary towards the Wirokino Riding boundary, where required. Further metalling of the approaches to Albert Road bridge has been carried out. Maintenance on Kingstone Road has been attended to. I had notices inserted in the main daily papers requesting through traffic to use the Foxton Road when travelling to Palmorston North. A request was also forwarded to the secretaries of the Wellington and Manawatu Automobile Associations asking them to assist the Council in dealing with the traffic. Wirokino Riding.—The fence referred to by Mr. J. Parsons on Queen Street has been repaired. A quantity of maintenance metal has been placed on the No. 60 Main Highway on the Ihakara Hill section. Grading has been carried out on this road, also on the Levin-Manawatu Bridge,. Heather-lea-Koputaroa and Koputaroa-Foxtori Roads. Drains on the Muhunoa West Road have beei\ attended to and maintenance work on water channels.on, the Main Highway has received attention. The plans for three miles of the reconstruction of the Levin-Foxton.:Main Highway have been submitted to the Main Highways Board for approval. Otaki Riding.—Metal patching and grading has been carried out at Waikawa River, Sevan's and D'Ath's deviations. Maintenance metal is now being placed on the Otaki Bridge; to Jubilee Road section. The plans for the re-.eonstruction of the Waikawa Stream bridge have been forwarded: to the Main Highways, Board for approval. Maintenance has been carried out on the Rahui Road.
Te Horo Biding.—The drains and culverts on the Main Highway are being attended to. The grader has been engaged on the Waikanae Beach Road. Metal patching has been carried out on the Te Horo-Waihoanga Road. Water channels and culverts on the Otaki Gorge Road hate received attention Maintenance work on Rahux Road in receiving attention. Expediting Waikawa Bridge.
The chairman, referred to the neces sity of expediting the replacement of the Waikawa bridge. He moved that the engineer be instructed to call for tenders for erecting the new bridge on receiving the plans from the Highways Board; such plans to be returnable in 21 days, and to be opened by the Works Committee if they meet before the Council.
The motion was seconded by O Bryant and carried.
