GROWTH OF NOXIOUS WEEDS.

COUNTY IN FOR AN OVERHAUL. A recommendation was made to the Horowhenua. County Council by the Works Committee, on Saturday, that the attention of the Stock Department be drawn to the growth of noxious weeds in the Ihakara district, with a view to property owners being requested to attend to the menace immediately. This was subsequently altered by the Council to include the -whole county. The chairman said that, from the point of view of a traveller through the district, the spread of ragwort looked very ugly. Or. Barber: It is not only in Ihakara; it is pretty general. As long as we can stir them up, it will be all right. A lot of other local bodies are hiaking a move. The chairman: In regard to the gorse it has had quite a good effect. Cr. Kilsby said that the ragwort was very much more extensive than he had anticipated. He advocated applying the recommendation to a larger area than Ihakara.

The Chairman: Say, in the county. Cr. Kilsby concurred. Or. Barber: It wanrts to be stressed for immediate attention.

Cr. Catley said he was glad to see that the approaches of the Ohau bridge had been cleared of fenne}. This year he had seen what he had not seen in any other year: a few stray weeds coming up by a railway crossing. That morning he had not noticed them; the surfaeement must have cut them out. There was no reason why a noxious weed should be allowed to grow along the road. Cr. Gi-nblett: There is another bad weed in Cr. Barber’s riding—that is, goat’s rue. One man thought .lie had the finest crop of lucerne he could get, but lie had a lot to learn. : The Chairman: Blackberry is worse. The recommendation, as amended to apply to the whole County, was adopted.

BUCKLEY DRAINAGE BOARD TAKES ACTION. At a meeting of the Buckley Drainage Board Trustees held on Thursday reference was made to the increasing growth of ragwort in the Board’s District, it being resolved to ask the Inspector of Agriculture to make an inspection of the affected area.
