NEW COUNTY MACHINERY.

CRUSHER, TRACTOR AND OAR TO BE REPLACED.

PURCHASE OF MOTOR TRUCK

DEFERRED.

The County Council, on Saturday, decided on the purchase of a motorear, a crusher and a tractor, by way of replacements and in the interests of efficiency. In a special report, the Engineer recommended that a new tractor be obtained to replace the bandusky tractor, as, if repaired temporarily, it would not be an economic unit. With regard to the Austin crusher, he reported that the opening in the jaw was so small that an extra''man had to be employed to break the boulders. He recommended that another portable crusher be procured. The Engineer also stared that the Ford truck was worn out and should be r placed immediately, and that the same action should be taken in regard to the AssistantEngineer’s car. >The Works Committee recommended that the necessity for providing an extra lorry for general purposes and a new .car for the Assistant Engineej be taken into consideration by the Council. The chairman raid that the Council had decided that the working of a number of smaller units for crushing was preferable to one big plant, because the metal had to be gathered from different places. Their experience was that, several small units would work more profitably in ; this district. It was essential that the work on which the Council were engaged should be carried out this season, and the Council would be well advised tb purchase the crusher as recommended and fit it out immediately. The Engineer might endeavour to make arrangements for some supplies of metal independently of the Council’s own plant, to ensure the carrying out of the two northern sections of road work during the present paving season. The question of whether to buy an English or an American truck should be discussed. Whilst the Council were very anxious to buy English goods to-day, it was probable that the English makers had not the kind of truck required for the Council’s work, which was of a heavy nature and necessitated entries into river-pits. Unfortunately the English manufacturers had not been able to comply with those requirements and at the same time provide a fairly tiuck. With regard to the purchase of a car, if they could get an English car in the vicinity of the price they wished, they would be well advised to consider it. The tractor and the class of crusher must be left in a good measure to the. knowledge of the Engineer, who must be given a fairly free band in the matter. . On the motion of the chairman, i, was resolved that the special report as relating to the purchase of machinery and motor-car be adopted, and that the report then be referred to a committee consisting of the Council as. a whole, with the Clerk Slid the engineer. By this resolution the recommendations in •regard to the crusher, tractor rind were adopjted; ian«d after the committee had met, it was announced that consideration ‘ of the purchase of a motor truck had been deferred for a month.
