SPORTING NOTES.

-(By ••'Silken Rein.”) A Reminder. (Nominations for all events of tlio Woodville Jockey Club's Meeting will close to-night at 9 o'clock. One for Koputaroa. A number of passed-in lot of the horses offered for sale at Trentham recently on account of Mr J. M. Samson, of Dunedin have since been sold privately and among the list is the three-year-old Wine Tray by Tea Tray —Orvieto which has been purchased by Mr F. F. Newman, of Koputaroa. Wine Tray, who was passed in at 100 guineas, was a runner at the Wellington meeting and the best performance in the three starts was a fourth behind Atholspear, Billion and Paquito in the Trial Plate on the middle day. As the former pair have improved considerably it is reasonable to expect Wine Tray to. make good with a little more experience. A Much Improved Hack. Billion's double win at Pahiatua is undoubtedly his best performance to date. He ran second to Acred at Manawatu, but that was poor class, but when he filled a similar position behind Atholspear at Trentham in & field of twenty-two that was some indication of his worth. In consequence of that performance he was supported as unbeatable ,at Pahiatua and on both occasions returned a winner, paving a small price, perhaps but acceptable. An Unfortunate Mistake.

After 'leading all the way iu th.i Electric Hack at Pahiatua on the second day Dobbin stopped suddenly to finish in third position. An inquiry revealed the fact that his pilot, Murray, had mistaken the winning post and believed, he lhad won when he eased his mount.

His First This Season. Anolo registered his first win this season when lie scored in the Manga* hao Handicap at . Pahiatua on Wednesday. A win for the aged gelding was certainly "due to him'as he has been oh most occasions in the money. The previous day, when backed down to a price, he was beaten by Toxeuma and at Ashhurst was mixed in all the trouble going to finish third. He was unplaced at Wellington, but prior to this ran third to Manly and Wenday at Taranaki Christmas Meeting and followed up by running second to Orazone at iSitratford on the opening-day and second to Wenday the following day.-' He has, at least, given his supporters a run for their money this season. f i Lipsol consistent.

At the Wairoa two-day meeting a week ago, Lipsol ran tlire thirds in hack company. The form was hardly good enough, nevertheless, to be considered seriously in connection with the Presidents Handicap at Pahiatua and he was accordingly neglected t < the extent of: eigth selection in that event to finish second. It was not a fluke, however, for he filled a similar .position behind Vigilance on the second day, but had received better support on the face of his first days form. High-Priced Yearlings.

■The imported sire Limond is such a proved 3tud success and has received such pointed distinction by the,„ brilliant ''exploits of his son Limerick that it was well anticipated bidding would be of the spirited order when his progeny came to be paraded at the Trentham sale last week." This was "'endorsed in a pronounced degree, for a fresh record price for a yearling sold in this Dominion was entered up. The yearling by Limond to obtain this dig tinetion is a colt from the Absurd, mare Waterwings, who fell to the bed ,of Mr Vivian Riddiford at 2400 gns. The following is a list of horses that realised 2000 guineas and over sold in New Zealand at the yearling stage.of their respective careers:— Gns. 1890 —Brown colt (Mousquetaire), by Nordenfeldt — Fraility 2025 1893 —Brown colt (Havoc), by Nordenfeldt—Fraility .... 2200 1922 — Bay colt (Meteoric), by Martian—Polymnia "'...... -' 2000 1923 — Brown colt (Mai'3), by Martian —Bronze ........ 2000 1926—8ay colt (Farrago), by Absurd—Leta 2250 1928 — Chestnut colt (Honour), by Limond—Homage 2300 1929 — Brown colt, by Limond — Waterwings , 2400 The highest price paid for a yearling in Australia remained for 3050 for a period extending to nearly two decades.
