SPORTING NOTES.

(By "Silken Rein.") Nominations Close. Nominations for all events (including Maiden Stakes and Novice Plate) at Woodville Jockey Club's meeting ■to be held on February 20th and 21st, close with the secretary at Woodville at 9 p.m. on Friday, February Ist, 1929. '

Local Gilding's First Start. The locally owned gelding, Propaganda, just failed by a narrow margin to bring off a rare surprise in the final event of the Wellington. Racing Club's meeting on Saturday last. The gelding, which is a five-year-old chestnut by the defunct Star Stream from Miss Kelly, has- been recently pasturing on his owner's, Mr Rod McDonald's, property at Kawiu Road, where during the last few months hehas been worked. Propaganda had not been raced in company but he has shown considerable promise in his work and was considered in good enough order to have a try-out among the hack company at Trentham and was consequently accorded a nomination in the Kaitoke Handicap. The son of Star Stream was not railed until the day of the meeting, but it had apparently not affected him to any extent for after being left at the post in the start of the five furlong event he made a wonderful recovery and just failed by half a length to beat the winner, Arikinui. The time I.os is not in any way slow for a field like this. If Saturday's performance can be relied upon Propaganda should at least pay his way on the course. His sire, Star Stream, has very little representation among the haeks in training, the best perhaps being Shining Star, who got on the winning list at Ashhurst on Anniversary Day, but Miss Kelly, dam of Propaganda, was a good winner in earlier years, and it is reasonable to expect that the local gelding will make good and prove a payable proposition to his popular owner.
