RACING ON ANNIVERSARY DAY.
Big Fields at Trentham.
Ashhurst Prospects.
(By “Silken Rein.”)
Interest in the racing world on Anniversary Day will be. mainly centred on the Wellington Racing Club’s midsummer meeting, which will open at Trentham tomorrow and continue on Thursday and Saturday. Those who attended the Foxton meeting will be thoroughly conversant with the form in the fields at the Ashhurst meeting, which will also be held to-morrow.
Both of the holiday fixtures are -vithin easy reach of this district and ocal sportsmen will be well represented at each gathering. The Wellington Racing Club meeting has drawn exceptionally large fields and with its congestion of form it is not going to oe an easy day for punters to-morrow. The principal events set down for decision are the Wellington Stakes for 2 and 3 years olds, the Wellington Cup and the Telegraph Handicap. Following is the programme;TRENTHAM HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 260 sovs.; 1 mile. Jcaumont 10 10 Zeuxis 8 5
The form of Beaumont at Foxton will not increase the number of his admirers for to-morrow, but he must not be disregarded for one failure, rhurnbell’s performances at Awapuni suggests lie will be'ready soon. At that meeting, he was beaten by Bo'nhomme by two lengths with a difference of 10 lbs. With 61bs better off they will be closer at the finish. Royal Lineage is good class, while Pale Star is likely after his Hawkes Bay outing. Arrowy ran second behind Lucy Locket ,followed by a second behind Gold. Brick at Oamaru and then went to Dunedin at Christmas ,where he won a mile event from Tembroney and Tardy. That form looks fairly good. Mister Gamp is now ready and Bright Day’s second at Foxton suggests a •win shortly. Singer can go a good six furlongs, and may'find the extra two furlongs just beyond him. Airtight ,will be worth watching. from now on and his two seconds at. Stratford may be forgotten. When the machine closes there will be a descent price for:
Mister Gamp Arrowy Airtight. Wellington stakes,-5. furlongs, Ad. Drake Gay Ballerina Aspiring. Goblin Market Ceremony' Honour Childsplay My Own Clever Royal Queen First Money Speed Light Francolin Winloch
While perhaps this-may not be .the most important event of the day, it will certainly be the interesting one. The absence of Supremacy is a little disappointing, but it is not going to be an easy race for Honour to win. Admiral Drake won at a good price, when he first' appeared at Trentham, but has not done so very well since. Aspiring was considered a top-notcher by his Southern admirers, but he has not yet proved it. Ceremony is consistent and must be given every chance to-morrow, ‘ while the disappointing Childsplay is now on the up grade. Clever is not perhaps quite up to class, but was. a good winner at Woodyille and Awapuni. Dalston is a possibility on Auckland running, but one that appears more is Gay Ballerina. She is the makings of a good one and. is one that is likely to bring about Honour's defeat. Francolin has not won many 2-year-old events, but he is always in the money and his nine lengths win at Dunedin is worth consideration. The trio most likely to be in the finish are Honour Gay Ballerina Francolin.
APPRENTICES’ PLATE, 7 furlongs. Claredon Phillippic Filosol Pound Note Full Mark Roi de Val Gold Dawn Royal Black Grand Acre Stanchion High Court Star God High Falutin ’ Swoopalong Landguard Sylvan Dell Llanore Topcre Moprgas Wine dray Paquito , The fact that Grand Acre has won twice in his two starts, he will claim the attention of some speculators in the Apprentices Plate to-morrow. Filosel was a winner at Southland and this field will test him as to quality. Stanchion’s form at Tauheranikau may be ■worth something, but Star God reads better <en the face of his Hawkes Bay performances. Both Full Mark and Rio de Val were winners at Manawatu and au improver in Royal Black should . come to the front soon. The distance will test Gold Daw,n but Topere should see it out. Moorgas has it in him, but whether he is fit for it, only tomorrow can tell. There will be plenty to speculate over in this event, but on- recent performances, it looks like the issue being fought out by Grand Acre . Star God Topcre.
FITZHERBERT HANDICAP, of 350 sovs. For two-year-olds. Five furlongs. First Division.
With 38 runners accepted for the Fitzhcrbert Handicap it has been decided to run the race in two divisions. Jazz Girl and Solmar is the only bracket, in the first division. The form pair are Royal Flyer 1 Courtlike, Second Division.
Dresden China and Tea Queen will run as ,a bracket in the second division. Equitant is a likely sort on early season form, but speculators will prefer
Cuticle Tobacco Land. WELLINGTON CUP, of 1500 sovs.;
The principal event has drawn a fairly strong field with Rapine heading the list. lie wbn this event six year's ago, but does not appear to have come--back on that form. Oi;atrix, by reason of her win in the New Zealand Cup, will have to be respected. Her best performance since that event appears to be her second to the deadheaters, Vertigern and Concentrate, in the Grandstand Handicap at Auckland. Vertigern has gone up. 2ib, Oratrix 21b, and Concentrate lib, and if these are to be considered it looks like Concentrate winning. Iloylake ran third .in the New Zealand Cup and on the following day Won the Metropolitan of one' and a-half, miles. Since that performance, however, he has not appeared in the limelight.- Set Sail has been running into fourths, but is improving yet does not appeal so well as Pink Note, who has been ■a consistent winner. The Manawatu Cup revealed n likely 011 c in Star Area, but he i* among good class in this race. Jo} Bird °is now at the top of her form, and is in better fettle than when sheran fourth last year. Battle Colours, after running second to Royal Saxon at Dunedin, again finished second behind Taboo in the Waikouaiti Cup. He will find distance an obstacle. The Hawk is not fancied in this field, but the Auckland Cup result sorts out Catsin as a possibility. Historic has not shown himself up to the class of this field, but his . strong finishes at Awapuni and .Marton makes him out a likely good winner shortly. Taliskei will'be coupled with Vertigern, and Beau Geste is being respected after his showing in the New Zealand Cup. Of the others Royal Saxon, Blimp and Teri will find most favour. The former is a very consistent runner and if Iris win in the Invercargill Cup (1:} miles) in 2.6 1-5 under Bst lib is his regular form he will only need.tojae himself to-morrow to be in at the finish. Foxton cup revealed a likely one in Blimp and he won so well that with only 7.0 he will have to be considered. Teri is game but he has a good deal of racing of late, and this has been responsible for his dull finishes. This is a really good field and the Concen-trate-Ora trix and .Talisker-Vertigern brackets will be attractive bets, bu‘ they will not have all their own way when the field includes Royal Saxon Historic Blimp. ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP, of 500 sovs.; 1 mile.
THE RIDERS
When Crown Area won the mile event at Riccarton in November in the. good time of 1.37 4-5, he carried 8.5, but is now up to 9.13. That he is a a-ood miler there is no doubt, but the weight is likely to stop him tomorrow. Panther-has gone up 201 bon his win in the Wairarapa. Cup, but that form looks good. King Midas was among the winners at Tauheremkau also, and now that he is in form he will have to be reckoned with. Raunui is a good one when she is right and her third at Marton gests she is coming to that point. Toxeuma can see out a mile and the fact that he ran Aussie to a neck in the King’s Plate, there will be plenty of money for this Arrowsmith representative/ Anolo has an engagement at Ashhurst, while South Islanders will expect Full Feather, Apache, and Kilmoyler to hold their end up. The latter' pair have good form too. Teheka was a good winner at Auckland, uhile the local trained Kilbronsyth may do better after his Australian experience. A mile will allow the big fellow to find his feet. There will be plenty of wagering in this event, with a good following for Panther a Toxeuma Raunui. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP, of 1000 sovs.; 6 furlongs.
Gascony ran a particularly good, race in the P.N. Stakes, when he beat Remnoana, and with any luck in the position draw, he should again head Eeremoana. Silverminc’s best at Auckland was a second to Nancy Lee on the opening day and third to Nancy Lee and Billikins on the second day. A runner that is coming to form is Joy King and he will be hard to beat to-morrow, while there are good reports of Awarere. Arrow Lad never runs.a bad race, while Cimabuc appears unreliable. 'Silver Paper beat Arrow Lad and Night-march at Awapuni, but the weights are in favour of Arrow Lad. Vast Acre could be relied on last season to get at least a portion of the stake in every start, but after winning at Feilding, he failed at Marton.„ He should make amends to-morrow. Lysander is now in good fettle, while Ridge mount is whispered as a possibility. Below these Kaihoro has good form, while of Consent, Banket and Veronese, the latter looks a good proposition. ‘ The draw for post positions will sway speculators in this event and if the following are treated well in that respect, they will be prominent.
Joy King Vast Acre Arrow Lad. RUAPEHU HANDICAP, of 260 sovs.;
The concluding event of the first clay is the usual Trentham last race puzzle and post positions will again play a prominent part. Gold Cure has paid up for Aslvhurst, but it is quite possible he will take his place in this, field. In his likely absence the best trio appear to : be Millais Zippor Bourse.
