NEW METHOD OF FLAX CUTTING.
DISCUSSED BY MILLERS. An executive meeting of the N.Z. Flaxmillei's’ Association was held in Foxton on Saturday, presided over by the President (Mr C. H. Speirs). Aiso present were: Messrs J. S. Moir, A. L. Seifert, H. Berry, Geo. Rough, W. Ross Jnr-., W. Nye, W. Speirs and the secretary (Mr D. R. Ogilvy Apologies for absence were received from Messrs E. Sutton, A. A. Brown, A. Fraser and Greig. In -discussing the benefits accruing from the “A” method of cutting flax, which is a system whereby the flax bush is cut from the base up in the form of an “A,” the President said that in tho Wairarapa where the scheme lias been iii operation for some time, flax can be cut every three years for. milling. Mr 11. Berry (Foxton) said that he had flax in his yards at the mill which was 10 feet long cut in the ordinary way off a swamp that had not received, the benefits of “A.” cutting.
The President said that lie had seen four-year-old flax no more than foui feet high. Conditions had a great deal to do with the growth but in his opinion the “A” method bad certain advantages.
It was decided that the President and Mr E. Sutton attend a conference to be held in Mr A. L. iSeifert’s office, Palmerston North next Saturday to meet representatives of. the Union to discuss the fixation of a rate of pay for the “A” method of flax cutting.
