GUILTY OF BIGAMY.
CHEF COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE
Christchurch, Jan. 4.
Albert Edward Herbert Vinpe pleaded guilty to a charge of bigamy in the. Magistrate's Court this morning before' Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., and was Committed to the Supreme Court for sen-* tence. The charge was, "That having married Violet Mary Giddens at Otaki, on September 6th, 1923, he d,id go through the form of marriage with Emily Marion Jewell, at Hamilton, on June 6th, 1928." Chief-Detective Carroll said that the accused preferred to have his case cleared up'in Christchureh, instead of being remanded to Hamilton. ,
Detective-Sergeant Young producod a statement in which the" accused said ' that he was a chef by occupation and . was 31 years of age. He had come out to New Zealand from England as a seaman some years before, and had married Giddens on the date on the charge. She had "elearad out" from him at that time. They had no children. She had gone with one McEwen, and later the accused saw in.a paper that she had a child and was taking action • against McEwen for affiliation. He had married the second woman under the name of Hubert Allan Burns, and had made out that he was a bachelor. In a second statement made last evening the accused said that he had read the statements of the two women concerned, and agreed with the essential facts therein. The accused had nothing to say ana pleaded .guilty.
