PERSONAL.
The Canterbury Horticultural Society has been advised by Dr. Arthur W. Hill, director of Kew Gardens, London, that Mr Clarence H. Jones, supervisor of the bog garden, and native section of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, has been accepted as a student gardener at Kew. Mr Jones, who is 21 years of age, is the first student gardener to be selected from Canterbury to go to Kew.
The Tablet reports that on Christmas Day, at the hands of Bishop Whyte, Mr J. J. Marlow, of Dunedin received the Papal decoration of the Cross of Pope Leo XIII., “Pro Ecclesia et Pontiface, ” in recognition of his many services to the church. The bishop, in pinning the cross on the breast of Mr Marlow mentioned' the notable fact tbat v lie lied given three sor.s to the priesthood, two daughters to the Order- of Sisters of Mercy, and one son to the Christian Brothers. He was also promient in Hibernian and St. Vincent de Paul Society activities and other Catholic works in the diocese. The medal was instituted by the late Pope Leo XIII. Its object is to reward those who in a general way deserve well of the Pope on account of services done for the church and it 3 head.
