"LADDERS" IN SILK STOCKINGS
POTATOES WILL PREVENT THEM.
To.check "laddering" in silk stock", ings, eliminate the dirt, and freshen up the fabric like new, use potato- water for-washing. Many-varieties of artificial silk are weakened by repeated applications of. soap and water. The excess moistuTe and the chemicals in the soap playhav? oe with the fine threads, so that they break and cause 'Madders " at the most -inopportune moments. To make the potato water, pour a quart of' clean-rain water over half a pound of potatoes, stirring well all the time."- Set aside until the potato •pulp settles and pour off the ■ clear, water. Knead the stockings lightly in this water, rinse in clean rain water,, and hang out to dry in the ordinary .way. If you Wish to ./dry the stockings quickly/ lay them between two thicknesses of blotting paper. This will absorb the excess moisture better than drying before a fire, and the silk will not be. shrunk Unduly in any part so that it bladders" at the first opportunity. .No'soap -whatever is required.
