MANAWATU-OROUA FLOOD CONTROL
LEVIN BOROUGH NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NEW SCHEME.
No action is to be takeii by the Levin .Borough Council in support of the Manawatu-Oroua River Board’s modified scheme for flood control. A letter was received by the Council, on Monday evening, from the' Board enclosing the engineer’s report off the cost of the scheme, which relates to the Manawatu and Oroua Rivers. The Board also invited the Couhcil to appoint representatives do attend a conference of local bodies interested, to be held at Palmerston North on January 24th, the- object of which is to send a deputation to urge the Government to subsidise the scheme.
The Mayor (Mr Hobson) stated that, some time ago, a deputation waited on the Council, which passed a resolution that the river control scheme then proposed would be of no benefit to Levin. He gave evidence to that effect before the Commission that investigated the subject. He did not think it would be advisable for the Council to be represented at the forthcoming conference. It should object to being included in the proposed district. On the mption of Cl - . Hutchings, seconded by the Mayor, it was resolved that the Board be written to and informed that the Council is not interested in the scheme and therefore does not propose to send delegates to the conference, and that it objects to bo cited as a party to the scheme.
