STROYED.
A lire occurred at Shannon early A fire occurred at Shannon early on Wednesday, resulting in the destruccontents. The house, which was situated at the corner of Yogel and Grey Streets, was -owned by Mr F. Small, who was aw r ay, being employed at Koputaroa. It was occupied at the time by Mrs. Small and the family of five. At a quarter to four Mrs. Small was. avvakended-by the smell of'the fumes and on investigating she /found the kitchen and dining-room full of smoke. - She aroused the, children and got them Gut. safely, also saving some clohting and small effects, but a sum of £2l in notes, which had been kept iii a sideboard, was lost. A neighbour, Mr. F. Charles, was called, and he gave the alarm. The Brigade were early on the scene,'but found that the site of the fire was 700 feet from the plug, whilst they only had 500 feet of hose. Some i old*hose rvas then brought up from the station, but it was too leaky to sus-, tain the necessary pressure. Had. sufficient good hose been available on their first arriyal, the front portion of the house would probably have been saved. The building was insured for £(500 in the Yorkshire Office, and the furniture for £2OO and piano for £75 in the Guardian. The value of the bouse was estimated at £BOO, and of the piano, 'which was a new one, at £llO. -.The.wash-house and motor shed at the rear of the residence were saved. •
