RACING CLUB’S RECEIPTS.

PUBLIC SPENT LESS FREELY, BUT OWNERS GAVE MORE SUPPORT. The drop in the totalisator figures at the Levin races on Saturday is difficult to accquut for seeing that, the conditions were so favourable for a record turnover. It was most probably due to the large fields in the earlier races causing the ' wary, speculator to make his investments cautiously. In some quarters it was suggested that the, fall was partly due to the fixture having preceded the 20th of the month, when the-- 7 dairy companies make their pay-outs. The attendance ' was undoubtedly affected ' by’the uncertainty that existed as to the, eondi--tion of the Foxton Road which had been impassable through flood water for some days.. This was unfortunate . on a fine day and a time in which trade conditions are at loast equal to those of thp .corresponding part of last year. The totalisator receipts were £16,266, . as- compared with £19,112 at the 1927 meeting; and the club’s share of the investments (71 per cent.) was £1220, or £2.13 9s less than was the case last year. The gate takings for .this and the two previous meetings were:. I £ s. d.

The decrease on last year is thus £B9 9s, bringing the total reduction of re-' | ccipts to £302 18s. Against this has to 1 be set the improved turnover resulting from the support of horse-owners. The fees for nominations and acceptances at this meeting came to £366, as compared with £270 10s at-the 1927 races, . the increase being £95 10s. I By this gain the loss in the gate and “tote” figures is reduced to £207 Bs. The his- . tory of racing is,one of ups and downs, and, while the present experience may . call for economy in the immediate fu- j ture, its effect will not be lasting; and •the fact that the entries have been so largely augmented will be sufficient on--couragemeut ito the! club - to continue its policy of gradual but steady devcb opment, upon, which visitors were loud in their congratulations on Saturday, ‘ *
