IHAKARA-SHANNON ROUTE.

PALjMERSTON PROPOSAL BEING CONSIDERED BY WORKS DEPARTMENT.

The suggestion by the Palmerston N. Chamber of Commerce for an alternative highway to give a more level route between Koputaroa and Shannon having been referred back to the Chamber by the Horowhenua County Council with a request for particulars, a plan was received at the meeting of the Council on Saturday. This showed that the suggested road would run from a junction near the Ihakara dairy factory and run in a northerly direction approximately midway between the railway and the main north road, eventually crossing the Buckley Road to enter Shannon. About half-way along the suggested road was shown an. alternative turn-off which would come out by the overhead bridge on the Buckley Road.

The plan was formally received by the Council, on the motion of the chairman (Mr Monk), seconded by Cr. Ryder. The chairman said he understood that the district office of the Public Works Department had received the same request and would make investigations. The District Engineer had asked that the County Engineer accompany the officers of his Department when making an inspection, and the chairman had promised that he would do so. Cr. Barber stated that if afi inspection were made at the present stage, it would be found that a very considerable amount of the suggested route was under water.

It was also stated by the chairman that the Public Works Department had also asked that the County Engineer accompany its officers when making an inspection for the Makerua deviation. Cr.; Gimblett suggested that Crs. Whyfe and Barber attend the Makerua inspection, if acceptable to the engineers.
