SATISFACTORY DAIRY SEASON.
prices stabilising, but output RISING. LEVIN FACTORY PRODUCTION UP BY NEARLY A THIRD. With the advance of the dairying season there has been an easing of butter prices, but on the other hand the production in this district haa gone up very materially. The Levin Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., has fixed the pay-out for October supply of butter-fat at Is 5d per lb. for first grade. The price for October butter-fat last year was Is Od. The prices for the other months of the present season were: June Is 7d, July Is 7d, August Is 7d, September Is 6d.* All the indications are that the peak of output will be reached much earlier than was the case last year, when, in accordance with the usual experience, the maximum of production was attained early in December. The butterfat received during October, as compared with the same month of 1927, showed an increase of 9.4 per cent., while in the tonnage to the end of October there was an increase of 30.7 per cent, over the output for that period of last year, approximately 103 more tons of butter having been produced. A comparison of last month’s increase with that experienced from the beginning of the season confirms the beneficial effects of an early spring, the full results of which have yet to be seen. During the last fortnight, owing to copious rains, 1 there has been a phenomenal growth of grass, and with the advent of warmer weather another advance in the cream yield may be expected.
