UPPER CYLINDER OILING
ITS APPLICATION T© COMPRESSION.
Good compression is the first essential for economical and efficient running of any engine, and when the compression of any; cylinder is weak it is false economy not to have the trouble rectified at once. If the. leakage is past the rings, the oil is being rapidly contaminated, with resultant increased wear throughout the' engine; if past the valves, it is almost, certain that the leaking, Valves will be damaged sufficiently to need replacement if they are ■not-promptly ground in. The use of upper-cylinder lubrication, is" mixing high flash-point oil with the fuel, sometimes 1 makes a great difference to the maintenance of compression. Since the upper piston rings are more perfectly lubricated, they last longer, and the effect upon the valves is alsp pronounced. Because of proper lubrication being provided f6r their stems, (hey , snap shut promptly when released by the cams, thus • avoiding the commonest cause of burning, sluggish closing. 'Also, the oil prevents the ■formation of hard lumps of carbon, which settling under the valve faces, are usual cause of pitting.
