WHEN YOU READ IN BED
Reading in bed is rather a dangerous amusement unless the light is a safe one and arranged so that one can read without straining the eyes. Candles should not be chosen as the illumination, in ease you fall asleep and the candle sets the bedclothes alight. The best illumination is an electric lamp or an overhead electric light or gas, which should not be too bright, and which should be shaded so that its rays fall direct on the book. Too often the reader lies on the side, so that the eyes and the book are slantwise to each other. To attempt to read in this position is extremely harmful to the sight. The light must be good and the print of the book and the eyes should be parallel and not too close together. To achieve this with the most comfort one must lie on his or her back With the light from behind. Any straining of the eyeff .tends to produce those fine wrinkle? of the skin rounds the eyes, as well as being harmful to the sight. Gas as well as electric light can now be switched off and on when one is in bed.
