THE DERBY WINNER. STREPIION, MOST SERIOUS RIVAL IN VICTORIA. AUCKLAND, Oct. 23. Mr 0. G. Maclndoe, the owner of Prince Humphrey, the winner of the Australian Jockey Club's Derby, arrived by the Niagara last night,dn a brief business visit, but will leave again bv the Maheno on Friday to see his colt" contest- the Victoria Derby at Flemhigtbn, on November 3. - Referring to Prince Humphrey's magnificent win' over■■ the hitherto unbeaten Mollison, Mr Maclndoe said that both the owner and the trainer of the latter admitted the superiority of the New Zealander. His only object .in racing the colt again at. Fleinington next month was to give another opportunity for Mollison to meet him. Mr' Maclndoe received dozens of con gratulatory messages fr.om London, South Africa, the Australian States and New Zealand.

<' I was offered £SOOO for the colt, but he is not for sale," said the pleased owner. ■lt had been hoped that Prince Humphrey would beat Amounis in the Craven Plate, in which he ran third, but a slipping saddle destroyed his chances, the jockey finishing up sitting "well back." Discussing the colt's chances in the Victorian Derby, Mr Maclndoe said: "I hope Mollison will be at his best on the day, but it is probable that the strain of his hardest race, and his first defeat, will have some effect. Probably Prince Humphrey's' most serious rival will bo Mr Sol Green's Strephon. a reputed great stayer of class and now sharing favouritism with my colt. But I think Prince Humphrey is still good enough." Prince Humphrey has already been sent to Melbourne guarded by two detectives, for, Mr Maclndoe remarked: "One has to look after horses carefully over there." Munro's fee for the Derby ride was about £3BO, "with something added," but concerning that the Auckland owner was modest. The price paid by Mr Maclndoe for Prince Humphrey was stated by him to be £SOO.
