AUSTIN BANNER PRESENTED.

Mr W." Hannan, president of the Horowhenua Rugby Distrio: (Council, attended in order to present the Austin Banner to the Levin School football :team, champions of the district. Mr J. Marsh welcomed Mr Hannan hi a few well-chosen words. Mr Hannan thanked the Institute for the invita.tion to attend. The Rugby Union was very pleased at the ink-refit taken by the' schools in football., They recognised that future senio'r players came from the schools. He was of vhe opinion that school football was very much improved and Mr MacDonald, of the Levin School had had no small share in the improvement. I\>xton had set a high standard in school football, and Levin had reached the standard as this year's victories showed. He had much pleasure in asking Mr Foss, as headmaster, to accept the Banner until some stronger school captured it. Mr Foss responded thankitip; the Rugby Union for the great interest it took in the schools. He hoped the report that Mr Hannan and Mr J. W. Procter were retiring from active interest in football would prove unfounded. Fo.riball could not spare two such stalwarts. Mr Hannan briefly replied and then retired.

The meeting then proceeded to dis cuss the educational question as touching the coming election, and it was resolved that an educational conference be held in Levin, preferably on the first Saturday in November, at which all the Parliamentary candidates for the "Otaki and Manawatu electorate-', together with the Mayors of Levi;, Otaki and Shannon, the chairman o: the Horowhenua 'County Council, aai the member of the Education Board for the district, should be asked to meet the members of the Institute to hear the pressing needs of present day education.
