LOST V.C. RECOVERED.
HOKITIKA, October 1. The family of the late Mr Samuel Mitchell, who won the Victoria Cross when captain of the foretop of H.M.S. Harrier at the Battle of the Gate Pah, in June, 1864, when he carried Commander Hay, who was seriously wounded, out,of action, have been searching for the lost medal for some years past. In 1909 it was mentioned in the cables that the medal had been sold by auction in London for £SO, and ever since the wife of the deceased and his family have been attempting to recover tho valued souvenir. , When Lord Jellieoe was in the district, his aid was sought. Later Mr T. E. Y. Seddou, M.P., introduced one of •Mr Mitchell's daughters to the Duke of York when he was here last year, and since then the chances of its recovery improved till the family learned that for the payment of £7O the much prized decoration could 'be recovered. The family sent the money Home through the' High Commissioner and the cross was received safely this week. The decoration was in a well preserved state and is very highly prized by members of the family.
