ANNUAL MEETING OF LEVIN CLUB. The Levin Tennis Club held its an- ) nual meeting on Monday evening, in ) Williams's Tea-rooms. The president (Dr. Thompson) was in the chair, and there was a good attendance. ANNUAL REPORT. I The report on the past season was i adopted, and was as follows: — j "Your Committee have to report I that the season 1027-28 has been quite J successful both financially and from, a \ plaving point of view. At the compnencement of the year the Club's bank overdraft stood at £Ol 12s lOd, and as a resuHPof the year's working tlm balance has been reduced to £3 3s Id. The members will agree that this result is highly satisfactory and sh.iws that, if the past season's membership is maintained, the Club's financial position is quite sound. "During the season the Club engaged in home-and-home matches with Foxton and Shannon, and played Otaki on the home courts. The results were ■is follows: —v. Shannon at Shannon. lost. 18 matches to <>; v. Otaki at. Levin, won, 13 matches to 10; v. Poxton at Levin, won, 18 matches to 6: v. Foxton at Foxton won, 16 matches to" 8; v. Shannon at Levin, lost, 11, matches to 10 (3 unfinished). "Series of Club matches (championship and handicap) were also played the results being:—Championship events: Ladies' Singles—Senior, Mrs Bennett; runner-up, Miss Bevan. Larlies' Singles. —Junior, Miss O'Donnell; iunner-up, Mrs Hunter. Men's Singles.—Dr. Thompson; runner-up, Mr Bennett. Handicap Events: Ladies' singles, Miss Bevan; Ladies' doubles, Mrs Bennett and Miss Bevan; Men's singles, Mr Bennett; Men's doubles, Messrs Areus and Todd; combined doubles, Miss O'Doinnell and Mr Marsh; men's handicap singles: (first series), Mr Townshend; ladies' handicap doubles: (first series), Misses Leger and Blenkhom. Ladies' handicap singles (first series), Mrs Bennett. "During the past few months the Borough Council removed the pine hedge on the Queen Street frontage of the Club's property. Your Committee considered that immediate steps should be taken to erect a fence to be in readiness for the forthcoming season, and thereby in some measure restore the shelter and privacy which the hedge has afforded the courts for so many years. The Council was approached by a deputation asking fliat- the Club be afforded some financial assistance toI wards the cost of the work, and, after i giving a very fair hearing, granted ! the Club the sum of £2O. The work was therefore put in hand, and the fence has now been completed at a total cost of about £45. Another necessary work, in improving the sanitary -arrangements in the pavilion, has also recently been put in hand and completed.
"A new departure was made during the past season in running a tournament for the benefit of the funds of the, Ladies' Rest Room. All of the neighbouring clubs were well represented, and as a result, the sum of about £l2 was handed to the Rest Room Committee. In view of the success of this function, it would possibly be in th? best interests of the Club to run a tournament of a similar nature during the coming season. "'A distinct loss has-been suffered by the Club in the resignation of JVlr L. H. Areus, who has left the district. For a considerable number of years Mr Areus has been one of our staunchest members, and by his long tennis experience and consistency of play has always contributed largely towards the Club's playing strength. :He has for a number of years been on the management committee, and is at present the Club's delegate on the Manawatu Tennis Association.
"It is with profound regret that your Committee have to place on record the sad death-of two of its members in Mr and Mrs Eyes. Both were keen members and* took an active interest in the Club's welfare. As a token of the esteem in which Mr and Mrs Eyes were held by the Club members, your committee sent a wreath in the Club's name to the relatives.
"The thanks of the Club are due to Mr D. E. Macdonald for his active interest in the Club's doings during the season and for his handsome donation of a racquet for the men's iiandicap singles competition, won by Mr C. Ben- < nett. "In conclusion your Committee wish to thank the members for their loyai support during the season, and trust that the coining season will be as successful as the last.'' ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers wore elected ! for the ensuing year:—President, Dr. Thompson; vice-president, Mr J. Marsh; hon. secretary, Mr D. W. Todd; hon. treasurer, Mr P. H.
