RECORD JERSEY SALE.

IMPORTED BULL KEALISES (2000

GUINEAS.

New records for Jersey cattle were established at. the sale at Wellington last Saturday of fourteen head brought from Hhe'United Stated by Mr T, & Cooper, America's most famous breeder of pedigree Jerseys for the past half < century, who despite the fact that he is nearly 80 years of age, came all the way from his home at "Linden Grove,"

Coopersburg, near Philadelphia, U.S.A., to attend the sale. He was amply re-

warded foi his enterprise. The aver- - age price of s(il guineas is a world's record for Jersey cattle, the top price of 2000 guineas for the four-year-old bull, Oxford Beau's Combination, Was, a record for the Southern Hemisphere! for a bull of any dairy breed, and the average paid for six of the progeny of this Lull, 454 guineas, was also a world's record for progeny sold at this age. - '* Tho sale was organised and conducted by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd. Mr W. D. Hunt, managing director, opened the. sale and referred: ,_ to the great enterprise shown by Mr Cooper, whose ability as a breeder had placed him in line with -the' world's : greatest improvers of live stock. Mr A. E. Missen, President of the Jersey Breeders Association, also extended a welcome to Mr Cooper and said t'hat for -.fifty years his name had -been.a, household word in the. Jersey world and descendants of« his cattle had had a marked effect.upon the breed in the Dominion.

Mr C. E. Robertson conducted . sale, which was full of animation. Com--petition was keenest for Oxford Beau's / Combination. Bidding commenced : quietly at 500 guineas and steadily, mounted in I'oo-guinea bids to 1100 guineas.. Six or seven breeders from various oarts of the Dominion Were all - bidding. After the fewr-figure »riec had been reached Mr A. E.'Watkin, who owns the largest herd in New r Zealand,., entered the bidding and it soon became apparent that he intended outbidding, all others. When 1800 guineas waa bid:; Mr Watkin quickly came again and when urged to make the bid 2000 guine'as he promptly responded. This sum completely shook off all opposition and •" the bull was knocked down to Mr Watkin amidst tremendous, enthusiasm.

Bidding continued strong, right, up to the conclusion of the sale and the. 1.4 head realised the great of £8253. At frequent intervals throughout the

shlc there were spontaneous bursts of applau.se which indicated the keen interest of all the breeders present. Both Mr A. E. Watkin and Mr Fred Phillips were the largest purchasers securing four head apiece, and Mr J. A. Miteheli, of Longbuni, secured two head, and Mrs I. W. Speirs, of Levin, one. Following the sale Mr Cooper was entertained at a ; .dinner by the N.Z..
