MANAWHENUA FAIL IN SHIELD MATCH.

WAIRARAPA WIN BY 31 TO 10

Very.few of ManUWhenua 's most ardent supporters really expected thai their team would be successful- in Jheir quest for the Eanfurly Shield at Carterton last Saturday, lim wearers of the red, white and blue have experienced fluctuations of fortune this season and were perhaps not so good t\ team as that which lifted the Shield from Wairarapa last year. Mindful of last year's experience Wairarapa fielded their most powerful combination. Cooke, 1924 All Black, and the best fiveeighths in the world at present, was there to inspire the rearguard. Quentin Donald, 1924 All Black hooker, was the leader of the pack. \Um Donald. 1925 All Black, was also in the grcon fifteen, playing his usual sound game as rover. ~A notable absentee from the green pack was Mick WiUoughby, whose injured ear would probably have I kept him out of Saturday's New Zealand team to play New South Wales. Against such a formidable combination the Manawhenua team suffered badly by comparison. Out-weighed in the forwards, they were beaten in the scrums and line-outs with monotonous regularity. Their backs, too, were out-' classed by the learguard fielded by the defenders of the Shield. With Wairarapa almost continually in 'possession of the ball, Manawhenua had no chance whatever after the .first twenty-five minutes. Their were well beaten by a better pack. The backs lacked the kicking power, the resource and the combination of their more ex perienced opponents. Only when Wairarapa eased up towards the" end, did Manawhenua hold an advantage for any length of time. The Teams. Wairarapa (green) Roach, Jury, Stringfellow, . Yates, \ Cooke, Gundy, Hart, J. Donald, Q. Donald, Eeid, Fair brother, S.'WiUoughby, Parker, Reside, McGregor. Manawhenua (red, white and blue J: j Wasley, Strange, Roberts, Akuira, Robb, W.Parata, Gleeson, Par- i sons, Crawford, Galpin, Conrad, Tatana, Dalzell, Satherly. . Mr. J. King, of Wanganui, carried "the whistle. Wairarapa score Early. 'Wairarapa kicked-off against the sun and with a succession of loose rushes, penned Manawhenua in their twentyfives. HeTe Jim Donald secured and burst over in the corner to draw first blood, after less than five minutes' play. Cundy failed with the kick. Wairarapa 3 Manawhenua 0. Play settled down in mid-field for a time, the Manawhenua forwards striving hard to hold their heavier and more experienced opponents. Wasley slipped' in attempting to clear a. high kick from Parker, Cundy securing to run round and score well out. His kick at goal again fell short. Wairarapa .. .. 6 Manawhenua 0 The Wairarapa rearguard now bogati to operate, the baU passing along the line of backs to Jury, who hung on too long and was properly dealt with by Strange. Keeping up the pressure, Hart received from the scrum and passed outr to the 'blind side to Jury, whoso pace carried him over to score in the corner though tackled by Strange and Taylor. Cundy again found the rang( too great. Wairarapa 9 8 Manawhenua 0 Play had been started for only twenty-five minutes, and it was appar ent that Manawhenua were up againsi it. From the kick-off, the. Manawhenu; forwards, headed by Galpin, Parson.and Conrad, invaded the greens' terri tory. Off-side play the advau : tage, Cundy lining to half-way with t< ! powerful kick. From a scramble in mid-field, Cooke secured and gaine< , twenty yards in a flash, but was we I tackled by Robb-. Quentin Donald ana WiUoughby headed a green thrust to the Manawhenua line, a penalty enabling Tatana to clear. The blue vanguard used their weight to gain ground Gleeson being to the fore. From a lineout the ball came back to Hart, who sent it on to Cundy, to Cooke, who stab-punted to enable Stringfellow to bustle Wasley over the line. From the ensuing scrum Tatana and Parsons came through in a loose rush to neutral territory. Two timely marks by Robb next stemmed a couple of green attatflft. Tatana, Gleeson and Parsons gained - ground, in a loose dribbling rush, but an infringement enabled Cooke to gain forty yards with a beautiful kick. Wairarapa Predominate. From a scrum Hart again received to send Jury away. Blocked by Strange, Jury passed in-field to Jim Donald, who , scored near the posts. Cundy made no mistake with the kick. Wairarapa .. ........ 14 Manawhenua 0 Soon afterwards Wairarapa were : penalised for lifting. Taylor's shot at goal fell short, Cooke finding the line at half-way. Wairarapa had been getting possession from nearly every scrum which enabled them to launch rush upon rush. A scrum new: the line saw'' Hart pass out to Jury, but Strange forced the Wairarapa winger out. A . high centreing kick by Jury was well | marked by Taylor, as the green pack swarmed down. From a scrummage in Manawhenua territory, Reside burst! through with the ball. Cundy was in attendance and taking the pass in his stride; outpaced Wasley to score near the posts. .His kick at goal went astray.* Wairarapa 17 Manawhenua 0The greens continually pressed Wasley, effecting a couple of timely saves. Akuira, Dalzell and Tatana followed up a long kick by Taylor, but Eoach was too safe. A scrum in mid-field enabled Hart to set his backs in motion, a spectacular movement ending in Strange forcing Jury out. The Wairarapa . ; winger soon broke through, but his centring kiek was returned by Wasley to half-way. In effecting a clearance.

Galpin kicked to Roach who, after running twenty yards, snap-potted a good held goal. The bell clanged for halftime immediately 'afterwards. Wairarapa " .. 21 Manawhenua 0 Manawhenua Score. On the resumption of play the Wairarapa rearguard soon swept into action, but Cooke's pass to Stringfellow was not accepted. Securing from the scrums repeatedly, the green backs opened out m several attractive movements that were spoilt by forward passing or checked by the improved tackling of tho Manawhenua backs. Strange flashed down the line in a characteristic run, but was upended by Jury and a penalty kick at goal by Taylor fell short. A. short punt by Robb was fielded nicely oy Strange, but again Jury blocked the way. Again the Manawhenua winger flashed down the line to be pushed out at the corner flag. The blues kept up the attack, a line-out enabling Tatana to secure and dive over the line to open Manawhenua's account. Tatana's good attempt at goal went outside the posts. Wairarapa 21

,The greerls soon retaliated, the whole back line sweeping down only for Jury's in-field pass to go astray, Wasley effecting a timely save. From mid-field the übiquitous Cooke received and short punted to Yates, who, when threatened by Roberts, passed in-field for Stringfellow to race through the gap, over the line and round behind the posts. Conrad, Parsons and Gleeson shone out in a counter-thrust by Manawhenua, but Jim Donald secured, and fending off a couple of high tackles, sent out to Yates, who ran out. Conrad, Parsons, Gleeson, Taylor and Strange shone out in several short-line attacks by the blues. Turning defence into attack McGregor burst through to hand on to Parker, to Hart who passed out again to Parker, who completed a dashing attack with a try near the posts. Cundy again added the extra points. Wairarapa ' • • • • 31 Manawhenua 3 Manawhenua Undismayed.

Despite the huge margin of points' against them, Manawhenua were by no means down-hearted. Wairarapa were securing the ball consistently from the scrums and line-outs, which enabled them to launch out in spectacular passing bouts, which, however, did not gain ; nuch ground. Conrad and Parsons toiled, hard in the Manawhenua pack, whilst Robb, Akuira and Wasley stemmed many a rush. In mid-field Cooke secured, and with a sparkling corkscrew run completely oafflcd Taylor and Wasley, who dived for his ankles, but missed badly. Strange, however, came across and with i brilliant tackle grassed the All Black five-eighth five yards from the line. Akuira came back to effect a timely force-down. Gleeson, Galpin, Tatana and Satherley gained ground with a loose rush only to be sent back by Cooke with a great kick. Still persisting in the attack Strange, Conrad and Taylor brought play to Wairarapa's twenty-fives. From loose oiav Parata received and passed out to Akuira who handed on to Gleeson.
