COUNTY PUBLIC WORKS.

REPORT BY ENGINEER. The following report for the month of August was presented by the County Engineer (Mr. F. T. M. Brewster), at the meeting ,of the Horovvhenua County Council on Saturday:Main Highways. General maintenance work by way of repairing pavement shoulders, cleaning water channels, grading and metal patching has been 'carried out on the main highways in the County. A quantity of [foundation (.metal (has Jbeen crushed, delivered and relied in on No. 60 H ; ghway between Tokomaru River and the north boundary of the County. Riding Matt 3rs. Te Horo. —General! {routine work has been carried out in the Te Horo Riding. Otaki.—The grader has been at on Blair's and Freeman's Roads. Thir'v-six feet has been put in the Kuka water-race by way of repairs. Wir.okino.—■Maintenance or repair .metal has been placed on Otaura, Lindsay, Gladstone, Khnberley and Tavistock Roads. Portion of the Hokio sand road has been trimmed up and to date 85'cubic yards of metal has been -delivered on to the road. The grader has been at work on Ohau West, Ohau West extension and Arapaepae Roads. The Water-race complained about on McDonald 'Road has been attended to. Tokomaru. Metal patching on Hume's Road is completed. Seventytwo cubic yards have been spread on the road, and a reserve dump of 16 cubic yards-is at the western end of the road. The school signs have been erected at the Opiki School. Watertables have been attended to on Victoria Road. Cleaning of water channels and metal patching has been carried out on Shannon East Road. Routine work has been carried out in the Riding. ~ General. The old tractor used to drive No. 1 crusher.has for some time past been giving a considerable amount of trouble, and on the 27th' inst. a bad craek developed in the cylinder block, which has put the machine out of action. This necessitated putting off seven men and laying Up two metal trucks. If the Council require this stone-crushing plant to be kept employed, it will be necessary to purchase another engine to drive it. Ranging. The Ranger reports that during the past month he has dealt with 71 head of stock in various parts of the County. The engineer submitted quotations obtained from various firms for tractors, and a price for the repair of the present tractor. It was decided to accept the offer of Mr. E. C. Sawtell for repairing the present tractor, at £26 with a guarantee for six months.
