The following business affecting the southern portion of the County was dealt with at the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday:— Mr. Charles Wirbart, Otaki Railway, wrote asking the Council to forward him, at their earliest convenience, one gate culvert. Cr. Ryder and the ' engineer wer* authorised to inspect the locality. Mr T. O'Rourke, Otaki, wrote applying for improvement to the road giving access to section part Pukehou la No. 1, situated on the South Manakau Road and lately occupied by Mr. D. K. Hannan, but now faken over by Mr. O'Rourke. The applicant stated that two rows of six inch pipes about 9ft wide, with a few loads of filling, would be .sufficient, and ■ the. filling could be got quite easily by sloping the banks of the creek alongside which he had to cross. The matter was referred to Cr. Rvdor for a report. Paundkeeper at Waikanae. Mr. John Lavin wrote tendering his resignation from the position of poundkeeper of the Waikanae Pound. Mr. E. Rimmer, of Waikanae, wrote applving. for 'the position. The chairman stated that Mr. Lavin had acted as poundkeeper for a number of years, and owing to advancing years he now felt compelled to Tesign. He moved that Mr. Lavin's resignation be accepted with regret. The motion was seconded by Cr. Ryder, and carried. The application by Mr. Simmer was referred to the engineer, with instructions to appoint him on the same terms as those relating to his predecessor—namely that, his remuneration consist of the" pound fees. Otaki Gorge Bridges.
With reference to the Taungata and Waihoanga suspension bridge and the proposed new suspension bridge in the Otaki Gorge, the District Engineer wrote that he thought it would be advisable that, in order to support the estimates submitted by the County Engineer, working plans of the new Waihoanga bridge and the light stock bridge should be submitted for approval. The chairman stated that the Council had been asked first for an estimate, apparently the District Engineer now required this to be supported by working plans. These would take some time to complete. He would take the matter up with the District Engineer in the coming week. The Council had been hoping to get the financial side of the matter fixed up before going to the cost of preparing plans, in case there should [be some hitch. The engineer was instructed to draw up the necessary plans, and authority was given to the Chairman to wait on the District Engineer.
