Mr W. Quarrie, of Napier, is visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs G. Quarrie, of Grey Street.
A “social afternoon” will be held by .the Ladies’ Guild at tlie Presbyteriah Church to-morrow afternoon at 2.30. A very hearty invitation is extended to all friends.
LastWening a party was given in the Parish Hall by Mr and Mrs G. Quarrie in honour of their daughter Sylvia’s twenty-first birthday. About sixty guests were present and a pleasant evening -“was spent in dancing, games, and competitions. A bounteous spread was set out to which full justice was done, a number of appropriate toasts being honoured the principal ones being that of Miss Sylvia Quarrie and her parents. The party was a thoroughly enjoyable one. .
The delivered in the Parish Hall on Friday evening by Mr Johannes Anderson, of Wellington, on birds and their habits proved most interesting and was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Mr Anderson was visiting Shannon under (the auspices 0)f the Women’s Institute, who are donating the proceeds to the school dental clinic fund.
An old resident of Shannon in the person of Mrs Olive Olsen passed away at the Palmerston North Hospital early on Saturday morning. 'She had been a sufferer from heart trouble for some time, but other complications setting in she was removed to the hospital on Friday afternoon. Deceased, who was 52 years of age, came to Shannon froni Norsewood about sixteen years ago with her husband, the late Mr, Knut Olsen, who predeceased her .in 1920. She leaves two children to mourn her loss, a son (Mr Jack Olsen) and a daughter (Melva), both of whom will have the deepest sympathy of their many friends in the great loss that has befallen them. The funeral took place at the Shannon cemetery yesterday afternoon.
It was resolved, at the Horowhenua County Council meeting on Saturday, to instruct the returning officer to take the necessary steps to fill the vacancy on the Council caused by the resignation of Mr A. McLeavey, who recently sold his property at Ohau and will not be able to act as a representative of the Wirokino riding owing to his pending removal to the southern end of the district.
The ; Horowhenua County Council on Saturday adopted a recommendation by the Works Committee that the Engineer be instructed to have the necessary survey put in hand for straightening the Hokio Beach Road towards the end and in the vicinity of the bridge near the Beach township; and that the Engineer supply an estimate of the cost of removing the bridge, also forming and metalling the road on the new course.
A matter arising opt of the Government’s proposal, announced on Saturday, to cut up the Central Development Farm into leasehold sections, was mention at the Horowhenua County Council meeting, by the chairman (Mr G. A. Monk), who said that an old resident of Levin had informed him that originally a road had been laid off right through the Farm, but that somebody was able at some time, to get a small clause inserted in a “Washingup” Bill whereby the road was closed. If the Farm were subdivided, it would be necessary to take a road right through to connect with the Buller Road. It would be fur the Council to see that roading provision was made for the future.
The proposal of a water system for Ohau, which a number of residents of that settlement (übmitted to the County Council earlier in the year, was referred to at the meeting of the Council on Saturday, by Cr. McLeavey, who was chairman of the local com mittee, but who has since sold his property at Ohau and has now resigned from the Council in consequence.' He said he Understood that the County Engineer (Mr Brewster) had almost completed the estimate for. the water scheme, and he asked the Council to give the Engineer permission, on completion of the estimate, to attend a meeting which the speaker would call at Ohau, and talk the matter over with the ratepayers. The Council accordingly granted permission for this to be done.
