BABY’S TEETH
\ HARD CRUSTS.
BEGINNING RIGHT.
When baby is about eight months old it is time to give the first lesson in mastication, and great care should be exercised in the teaching of this important matter so thaf it may become a habit for life.' Hard baked crusts should be tho first food given to these little ones, for the teeth, must be exercised or they are liable to decay. It' is Jameatablp, even to-day, the number of children who lose their milk teeth in this way* So many mothers make the mistake of softening the food of their babies, who thus swallow their meals with no effort; and the result is that the teeth become weak through lack of mastication, and the children might just as well, have no teeth at all. . .. To Make Crusts.
To make the crusts cut a piece of bread off the loaf an inch thick, arid cut this into fingers of from three-quar-ters to one inch in width.
Lay these on a baking tin in the oven, leaving the door slightly ajar, and let them bake for "an hour until they turn a golden brown and are thor-oughly-crisp. Store them in an airtight tin and give baby one piece 10 minutes before each meal, and gradually you will see 1 them disappear with infinite relish.
Do not fall into the habit of dipping them into sugar or honey to make them more acceptable. In giving these crust? to Baby you are safeguarding s both the teeth and the digestive organs. The pressure of the crisp food on the gums stimulates the circulation and help? to 'keep the teeth healthy. . v Crisp fruits, such as apples, pears, nuts,' etc., exert a definite cleaning action by rubbing the surfaces of the tooth-gently, thus preventing food from collecting between them and setting up-decay. As soon as the teeth appear it is very important to teach the small child to use the toothbrush, which should be rubbed up and down as well as across the teeth, and then the mouth rinsed with a mouthwash.
