TOO OLD AT 46?
AUCKLAND, Sept. 6.
The age of as costing officer, for which position applications are to be invited by the City Council, was mentioned by Miss Alice Basten at to-night’s meeting. Miss Basten suggested the conditions should stipulate that the age of applicants should be under 46 years. “Why?” asked the Mflyor, Mr Braildon.
u He would be too old after 46,” replied Miss fasten amid laughter. She added that an older applicant would not be able to give sufficiently valuable length of service as, in any case, the retiring age was 65. UWell, I am over 46,” observed the Mayor reflectively. “In any case not many men are qualified for such a position, and it would be a pity to turn/ down a good man because he was 47 or 48.”
Miss Basten moved that the age limit be 46 years.
“Any seconder?” asked the Mayor. “The age of chivalry is not yet dead,” said-Mr A. J. Stallworthy. “I will second the amendment. pro forma.”'
..The amendment was substantially defeated. .
