In the early ygars of the Civil War Lincoln was bombarded with . useless advice from all quarters, and / the chairman of a deputation from Chicago approached him with the an- * j nouneement, "I am here with a message from the Lord.” , ''M Lincoln made the following answer: “Wo need counsel from the Lord, but -\£ I am inclined to think that if the Lord .'fg has a message for me Ho will give it r jf direct, ana not by way of Chicago.” '
