Although Manawhenua forwards were badly beaten in the set scrums, they did considerably better in the line outs where they more than held their own. In the first spell, the home forwards gained the advantage from 19 line outs as against 14 which the Bay turned to account. As is usually the case with line outs it was frequently difficult to distinguish which side actually obtained' the advantage and for this reason 31 line outs- during the game Were classed as indeterminate. In the second spell, the honours Were even both sets of pack-men obtaining possession on eight occasions.
Manawhenua were awarded nine free kicks as against six for Hawke’s Bay. Each side turned one penalty to account.
