SPORTING NOTES.

(By "'Silken Beta.”)

New Hurdlers. . The opening of a new racing season finds an appreciable addition to the ranks of hurdlers and in the case of the Marton meeting the latest additions faired remarkably well. The three placed horses, Cohesion, Beaumont and Lieut. Bill, have only quite recently been transferred to that section. One of the best. Cohesion, winner of the Rata Hack Hurdles at Marton, since his first, appearance over the obstacles has given promise of developing into one of the Dominion’s first-rankers in this branch of the sport. His Gisborne win sorted him out as a good.sort and consequently his next outing at Dannevirke found’him plenty of support. He was a trifle unlucky in not beating Royal Elm on that occasion but his decided win from a good field on Wednesday was a pleasing performance. Catching the pacemakers early in the race he assumed the lead before reaching the stand, first time round, and jumping faultlessly increased his lead to 1 win in a jog by 15 lengths. That performance will carry a lot of public respect in his next outiifg. Beaumont’s tot jumping. Beaumont, whose name is among the nominations received for the N.Z. Cup, made his initial public appearance over the sticks at Marton and put up a very creditable run to finish second in the Rata Hack Hurdles. As could be expected he was among the leader early, in fact, was first out at the barrier, and his useful form on the- flat stood him good stead. Though he failed to catch the winner, he was faster than the remainder of the field and beat the third horse, Lieut. Bill, comfortably by five lengths. A class 3-year-old.

Moutoa Treasury, the three-year-old daughter of Paper Money-Moutoa Ivanova had her first outing of .the seasdn at Marton on Wednesday when she gained the verdict by a head in a fighting finish from the favourite, Knightlike. Though she had no recent form, she was by no means an outsider and was apparently expected by a large section, the public installing her second choice. Moutoa Treasury is a well bred filly and on her dam’s side is closely related to that champion performer, Sasanof, so that, as she is only now a 3-year-old, she should turn out a payable proposition to her owner, i Mr/ F. S. Easton. N.Z. Cup candidates.

Three nominees for the N.Z. Cup Pangolin, Blimp and Pale Star got on the winning list at Marton. The former disposed of a useful field in the Spring Hack Cup and has shown consistent form in his last five or six. outings.: By reason of his inability to run out the distance, he will not, as yet, be seriously considered in connection with the big event. Blimp, the 4-year-old son of Gasbag sprang , a mild surprise by beating a good field of sprinters. During his-past season’| n form he showed more liking for a middle distance and it was probably on that account that he was neglected on Wednesday. As the result of this win his prospects in the N.Z. Cup will come under consideration and if he is tried over the distance he should, with a little preparation, bs able to see out the 2 miles. If he has' in him the staying powers of his sire, Gasbag, then he will be one that has to be reckoned with. Gasbag shares with Gold Light the N.Z. record for 2j miles, both put up on the Riecarton course. i

Pale Star, by winning the Tutaenui Hack, registered his fourth successive win spread over about five weeks. He did not get the best of the start on Wednesday and by gradually improving his position made a wonderful run at the finish and Avon by a clear length from Kilburn. The Tribulation—Star Glow gelding first Avon at Gisborne over 7 furlongs and improved in his next run to see out 1$ miles, but Avhether he is capable of managing the big event, is somewhat doubtful. His. remarkable consistency Avill, nevertheless, find small favour with early investors. Worth Following. On his running at Marton, Lady’s Boy. looks capable of capturing some good races in the next. feAv months. In the Spring Hack Cup he beat all but Pangolin and then started later in the dav r to run Blimp to a head in the open six. Lady’s Boy it will be remembered was the dividend payer at the last Otaki meeting and if he is as reliable as his Wednesday’s form Avould suggest, he should be a payable proposition to folloAV in his uext few outings. Bisox Fails. The biggest disappointment at Marton Avas the failure of Bisox in the Marton Handicap. She was backed as unbeaten and certainly looked as such Avith the Parliamentary Handicap and Winter Oats to her credit. A field of thirteen lined up and the fact that she Avas slow in starting Avould account for her not being prominent Avhile the small course would be a handicap to a certain extent. She finished, lioav-eA-er, into third money, barely two lengths behind the Avinner and had the satisfaction of easily beating an old rival in Nukumai, who Avas neyer dangerous at any stage. Ran Fourth. A maiden performer in Otaura Lass, Avho Avas quietly expected by her con-' nections, failed to return a dividend, but nevertheless ran a particularly good race in a fieldr of eighteen, finishing* just behind the\ stake Avinners, separat-

ed by heads only. Otauru Lass is a right good sort of whom more will be heard of in the near future. Will Improve. Kiosk, by reason of his want of a run, failed to get nearer than seventh in the Railway Handicap. Had he scored, an appreciable dividend would have been collected by his supporters whose faith in him will be returned when he has become more seasoned and settled down to his work.
