BOOKMAKERS’ ELDORADO.
BECOMES A WASHOUT. (“Sun” Special.) SHANGHAI, Thursday. Shanghai, with its pony and greyhound meetings, lias over 150 racing days a year. As a result, it is said that bookmakers in other parts of the world, including Australia, have been casting longing eyes in this direction. All hopes of reaching a new Eldorado were shattered to-day, however, when the Greyhound Racing Club, following the example of two horse-racing, clubs, decided to restrict betting to the parimutuel, and to forbid bookmakers the use of the course. The clubs retain a percentage of the parimutuel, which also provides approximately £20,000 for-charities annually.
