HERO WORSHIP
He stood, with modest mien, talking with an eager group’of newspaper reporters. He waved his hand with a deprecating gesture. It was nothing, he was heard to remark; anyone else could have done as much.
.Photographers pressed forward for close-ups. The crowd cheered. An elderly gentleman, pinned a bit of ribbon on his lapel. On the fringe of the admiring throng a newcomer asked, "Who is this hero —another transatlantic flyer?" "No," replied, a witness, "even a more brilliant figure —he admitted that he was going over 20 miles an hour."
