LABOUR SARCASM. LONDON, July 23. Replying to a question in the House of Commons by Mr. J. H. Hayes (Lab., Liverpool), * concerning Viscount. Byng’s appointment to Scotland'Yard, the Home Secret aiy (Sir Wm. Joyn-son-Hicks) said that the Police Act specifically prevented the Commissioner being selected from among members of the House of Commons. Mr Hayes: There is no objection, in the event of a constable being raised to the peerage, to his sitting in the House of Lords, and then returning to ’ traffic duty (Loud laughter/ Replying to another question, Sir William said that the head of the police would not be allowed to answer quest the House of Lords.
