MANCHESTER UNITY DEBATES PROPOSAL-BROTHERHOOD IDEALS FOSTERED.
DOUGLAS, Isle of Man,
Herbert White, Grand Master of the Unity of Odd Fellows' referring to a proposed alliance of English and American lodges, in his presidential address to 800 delegates at the. annual conference here, said that it would "bring together 4,000,000 members to contribute the greatest moral factor ever created to cement the English-speaking race." Discussing the steps to bo taken to establish reciprocal relations Odd Fellows of America he said that he held it as a sacred duty to leave no effort untried to discover & formula which would reunite the Odd Fellows throughout the world into a mighty community to conquer distress, alleviate sorrow, and promote the ideals of human brotherhood. He said he had never failed to realise the importance of the inclusion of women in the society from a thrift point rif view, but there was an added significance these days when complete political emancipation. had .been conferred upon them. Manchester Unity, he said,, was sound in its finance with an approximate surplus of over £4,000,000.
Sir Claude Hill ( Lieutenant-Governor of the Isle of man, speaking as a member of the order, welcomed the conference to the isle. Manchester Unity, he said, Avas one of the most'typical British institutions because it loved independence and .."did not want to be run by anyone, else, not even by our own Government."
