DULL RUGBY.
MANAWHENUA-OTAGO MATCH.
DUNEDIN, August 15.
In one of the dullest representative games seen in Dunedin for some years, Otago defeated Manawhenua to-day by 11 points to 9 under ideal conditions. Both packs of forwards were listless, and the play of the backs lacked sparkle. The game was even from start to finish. The teams'were as follow: —
Otago.—Callander, McClymont, Churchill Graham, Matheson, Haugh*ton, McLean, Souter, More, Sonntagg, Carnegie, Dunne, Finlay, Clark, and Delahunty.
Manaw'henua.—Williamson, Strange, Stevenson, Roberts, T. Parata, Akuira, W. Parata, Summers, Crawford, Tatana, Parsons, Conrad, Dalzell, Miles, and Gleeson.
Scrambling play followed the visitors' kick-oflv Good work by McClymont let Otago into Manawhenua territoiy, where Matheson potted without success. Play returned to half-way, where Gleeson bioke away on his own, and from the ensuing play Parsons' forced his way over. Akuira's kick failed. Manawhenua 3 Otago ° The visitors kept up the pressure, and from a hard kick Otago forced. Callander went off, injured, his place being taken by Wallis. From a scrum inside the twenty-five line McLean sent to Haughton/the ball being transfeired to Graham, who beat several of the opposing backs, and scored at the corner. Churchill's kick failed.
Manawhenua 3 Oi!ago • • 3 A bout of passing by Otago ended in a scrum five yards out, Wi Parata finding the line with a fine kick. Then Roberts broke away in a. great dash along the wing, which ended in a forward pass. The visitors' forwards went to the Otago line, where they set up a hot attack, Haughton eventually finding the line. The Otago forwards and backs then broke away in a fine movement which carried the ball from one end of the ground to the other, but when within an.ace of scoring, an infringement lost them their chance. In the second spell Wallis went on the wing, Churchill going to full-back and McGlvmont to first five-eighth. Dalzell broke through the Otago forwards in a solo dribbling effort, but Otago returned and a bad pass by Haughton lost a sure try. Gleeson went oft* hurt, Satherlcy coming on in. his place. After a scramble near the corner Clark forced his way over for Otago's second score. Souter's kick failed.

At halfway McClymont secured and ran past the twenty-five, passing to Findlav, whose pass to Clark was forward." Strong clashes by Akuira and Roberts put the visitors on the attack, and Otago were hard pressed at the corner, Dunne dribbling out of danger. From loose play in midfield Haughton sent the backs' away. Wallis dashing over to score. Souter converted.

Roberts wont off injured, Taylor taking hi 3 place. After passing at halfway the ball went out to Strange, who kicked and regained the ball, scoring well out, Taylor's kick failed. . Otago' •• • ll Manawhenua 6
Haughton was carried off, Giles replacing him, Faulty defence by Otago let the visitors through once more, and Akuira went over for a try at the corner. Taylor's kick failed. Advice has been received by Mr J. Casey, secretary of the Horowhenua Rugby District Council, from the Combined Union, that the junior rep. game, Manawhenua v. Wanganui, will be played at Palmerston North on Wednesday, August 22nd, commencing at 3 pin. The Horowhonua players to take part, in the match are Powell, Atkins, Hartley, Farrell, Taylor, Vertongen and McKcnzic; emergencies, Trotter and Thompson.
NORTHERN THIRD GRADE REPS. The Northern third grade reps, to take part against the Southern reps, en Saturday are as follows: — Full back Huff (Foxton) Three-quarters Palmer (Wer.) H. Jones (Wand.)
