COMBINED TEAM BADLY BEATEN.

MANAWHENUA OUTPLAYED BY WANGANUI, 22 TO SIX.

Wanganui defeated Manawhenua representatives here yesterday by 22 points to 6. .in The Aveather was fine and the ball and ground dry. A slight wind blowing did not affect play. The teams lint-d out as follows: — Wanganui. Darby ; Carlson Tillcy McLennan Wakeling (2nd) Shanley (Ist) Vangioni. Bellas Pine Pun Leahy L. Stewart ~ D. Ross Oxley McLean Manawhenua. Taylor . • Strang Westwood Roberts Stevenson Akuira" Parata

Gleeson Hakaraia Summers ' Conrad Miles Tatana Dalzell Crawford

It was obvious at. the start that Manawhenua were not the same team as overwhelmed Wanganui last year defending the Ranfurly Shield. Then was no Jacobs to protect Parata at the base of the scrum. The visitors opened strongly in the forwards. Some fast passing initiated by W. Parata in the backs led to the belief that the home team would need every effort to keep their line intact. Roberts figured in several dangerous runs which solid tackling by McLennan robbed of reward. There was lack of finish in-Manawhenua's attack, however Wanganuo profiting by the slightest mistake on the part 6f the opposition. The home side was quick to exploit possession. The visitors had the advantage from a territorial aspect in the first spell, but the home backs' fast movements and their snappy passing, and the dangerous speed; of the nome forwards in the loose turned the tables in three fine movements culminating in tries. *

Manawhenua did not develop the form their early efforts gave promise of; W. Parata at half played a good game giving his backs fast passes and proving an elusive and dangerous runner at all stages. Akuira and Roberts were both good backs, the former cutting in nieoly on occasions. But beyond hint the line was not impressive, Wanganui smothering most attacks before the ball reached the wing. Forward play was something in the nature of a grim battle, Wanganui fielding its best pack for years. It stood .up.,to the visitors' early efforts well, developing dash as the game progressed. Manawhenua's best forwards were Conrad ; Tatana, Hakaraia and Crawford.

Taylor gave a finished display at full back and on the day was better than Darby. The Manawhenua man was slow on occasions but his line kicking and handling were accurate. Darby was much slower than usual and penalised the home team by not finding the line.

Much interest attached to Wanganuis' play, as the team w r as vastly changed from that which was defeated by. Taranaki on June 4th. Yesterday's display was a triumph for the selectors, the new talent justifying itself. Yangioni, tried at half back for the first time, was a find, beating the Manawhenua forwards and giving the home side splendid chances. Shanley and Wakeling made excellent links to Carlson, Tillcy and McLennan, the best threequarter line Wanganui. has had for years. Oxley, Leahy, Ross and McLean were the outstanding Wanganui norwards. The Game Described. The Manawhenua van opened with a dangerous rush. Bellis and Leahy led the Blues in retaliation, Vangioni sending the line away. Oxley and Bellis handled at the finish for "Moke" to score, Leahy failing to goal though a no charge was ordered. Wanganui 3, Manawhenua 0. The visitors harassed the Wanganui defence. Carlson missed a high kick. Gleeson racing up failed to get the ball as it bounced into touch in goal. Taylor could not goal from a penalty. Akuira made a nice opening but his pass to Roberts went astray. Ross and 0 ley led Wanganui from the danger zone in a dribbling rush. Bellis, Pine, Stewart, Shanley and McLean handled sending Vangioni over. Leahy missed converting. Wanganui 6, Mannwlienua 0. Westwood kicked into Carlson's arms, Tilley, Stewart and Oxley then handling for the third try, Tilley converting. Wanganui, 11, Manawhenua 0. • As the result of hard forward play creeping down touch in a succession of line outs Conrad and Tatana were most prominent as Manawhenua invad*d the home 25. Parata gave a lightning pass

—— —: . to Roberts on the blind side for bini to score. Taylor'could not goal. Wanganui 11, Manawhenua 3. Half time sounded soon after. Wanganui were a much better team in tlie second spell... As the result of a pass by Vangioni the home rearguard went into action, Wakeling kicking through. Tilley followed up to score. The scorer missed. Wanganui 14, Manawahenua 3. Tense moments followed as Mana-whenua-penned Wanganui to the line. Conrad and W. Parata were prominent but the home defence was sound. Ta'ylor was injured and was replaced bv'T. Parata, Akuira going full-back. * Summers and Crawford made a spectacular dash with Gleeson in ■ pupport, D-M-bv getting across in time. A bouncing ball in midfield was'not taken by Tilley. Strange racing at top got possession and outpaced Darby to score. The kick was ruled out by the referee. Wanganui. 14, Manawhenua 6. The Wanganui* pack was infusing great dash into, the play, Ross scoring after three five: yard .scrums. Tilley failed with! the kick.

Wanganui 17, Manawhenua 6. Manawhenua opposition was a thing of the past. Vangioni breaking clear from the tight scored under .the posts after a. tricky run, Tilley adding the points, and a. hard game ended with the better team on top.-

PLIMMER TERRACE -v. BALLANCE STREET. THE CHALLENGERS WIN. •Tlje' annual local Rugby fixture between. Plimmer Terrace (the - holders) and; Ballanee Street representatives, for the Licensed Victualler's Cup donated.' by Messrs Moynihan Bros, tfas Curran and H. Hook, was decided on the Domain at the week-end, whenthe challengers were successful in wresting the Cup from Plimmer Terrace, with a score of 11 to 3. The holders had been very careful in selecting their team, having drawn from the north of Plimmer Terrace as far as Miranui and to Buckley in the South, while the challengers, despite several defections at the last minute, such as J. Hennessy (Beer Straight), T. Movnihan ' (McCarthy's Ale), C. Young" (Silent Flyer) and Roy Hook (Egg Circle), proved the better team on the day. The players this year were much younger thau in the past, but it was evident that quite a number were short of a gallop. Each team had its army of supporters, who urging .them to give of their best, cans- ( ed the contestants to make the pace a cracker, .particularly in the first ten . minutes. As in the past, a number of , new methods as to how to hanrlle the ball was introduced, these causing the respective teams to be penalised. The obstruction rule was cleverly infringed at times,, and one player would, have done- .credit- to an All Black, by the way he escaped the vigilant eye of the referee. Spectators . were also, treated to' something new in scrum formation. Often the pack in,their struggle would screw round, to the opposite side, the ball in the meantime having reached the back line. Quite a number of both sets of forwards showed that they haa a full knowledge of the •"safety first" rule,.bv avoiding the tight stuff. game had not been long in progress before Ballanee Street became aggres. sive, but as their opponents had not quite recovered their second wind, and the attackers were also in the same plight, nothing eventuated. Then the ball travelled up and, down the field, causing many to falter in following up, both teams losing opportunities of scoring. Finally Carter (late Fish and Chips) from a mark had an unsuccessful shot at goal. The fullback Wilson (Master Strowan) on. receiving the ball did not touch down, but kicked out, the wind carrying,, the ball into touch five yards from the line, where fsom the line out W. Moy r nihan (Off-side Bill) secured the ball and crossed the line unopposed amidst applause from the Ballanee ..Street supporters. No goal Resulted. . Spurred on by this surprise the holders mad? every effort to' equalise, but faulty passing and a solid defence held • them hack. Half time canie with Ballanee Street holding an advantage of three points. In the second half Ballanee Street set off to increase their lead,_ but thev had not counted-on i. Wilson who saved repeatedly by finding the line. Then, Plimmer Terrace tobk a hand at attacking which ended m Stern (of Tug-of-War fame) scoring at the corner. The attempt to goal was a poor one. With the scores level, renewed life was put ■ into the game, during which the Ballanee ■ Street backs, handling the ball well with passing movements, invaded the territory of the cup defenders, but lack of finish and a stubborn defence stopped them from scoring. Finally, however, from a scrum five yards from the hn<? Buckman (Spindle)* dived across to score near the posts, V. Pope (Bee Sting) converting. It was here tha-. some of the Plimmer Terrace, players questioned Hhe referee's decision in awarding the try, with the result that he left the field in 'disgust, Mr J. T. Bovis filling the role. On the ball going into play again Plimmer Terrace made another effort to reach their opponents' line by moans of a forward movement, but lack of condition 'prevented them giving it the final finish. Then the Ballanee Street backs, with a fine passing movement, invaded the holders' territory, Takerei (Moleskin) crossing near the corner flag. Shortly after, 'time souuded with ithe score standing: Ballanee Street 11, Plimmer Terrace 3. The' Cup was then handed by Mr J. T. Bovis to Mr W. Moynihan, captain of the winning team, the former in a bapt>y speech congratulating the players of both teams on the fine contest, expressing the hope that next year Plimmer Terrace will make up the difference between the two teams as shown on that day's play.; He an-

nounced that in a. fortnight's, time''it was hoped to arrange a'game between citizens of over 40 years of age, with football ability. The. proceeds from the game are to go towards assisting the local unemployed. HOROWHENUA PRIMARY SCHOOLS REP TEAM TO PLAY WELLINGTON LADS.
