1000-MILE ROAD RACE
Nearly 100 cars lined up for the 1000-mile road race held in Italy recently. It was a spectacular event, and troops were used to clear the highway intersections as the race progressed.' A super-charged 1500 e-bic centimetre Italian car won at an average speed of 52* m.p.h., or four miles an hour faster than the record in last year's race. A 2000 cubic centimetre car was second. A surprising feature was the close finish after over 19 hours' running. Only eight minutes separated first and second and 15 minutes second and third. In a special class for nine horsepower or 1100 c.c. cars the winner averaged 42 m.p.h. for the 1000 miles. In view of the mountainous country included in the routes the speeds are certainly high. Road races of this type are an admirable endurance test, and with a field of 100 competitors, the Italian motor industry should loam much from observation of the failures.
