ELIMINATION OF RABBITS
"NONE LEFT IN TEN YEARS."
FORECAST FROM CANTERBURY
"The rabbit will soon be extinct in New Zealand," said Mr W. P. Spencer at a meeting of the Selwyn Plantations Board last week, when consideration was given to a report from the superintendent. The report stated that the poisoning and trapping of rabbits was still being conducted over untenanted reserves, but the present scarcity of
■tins made it difficult for .the expert on the property to make a reasonable living from his catches. When a mcmßer of tne. tjoard asked the reason why rabbits were getting scarce, the superintendent said the position was due to the efficacy of poisoning operations. "If skins were worth £.l each there would soon be no rabbits left." said another member.
Mr Spencer said the position was flue to rabbits flying out from natural causes.. A few years ago, on his property if about 2000 acyes. near Chancy's, it was a cormnon sight to see scores of rabbits whereas, to-day, only an odd one or two were seen. "In ten years' time," he concluded, "there will not be a rabbit left in New Zealand."
